I bought a ton of these from my trip to the Philippines this month. Kinda amusing.

It's a wood toy/display that has a barrel "hiding" a man. Lift up the barrel for the surprise!

That toy/gimmick is not just limited to PI. No offense meant, but I've been to plenty of pacific third world countries and you can find them there as well. Like you said they make great gifts as do many of the wooden puzzle toys etc.
