ok, ive heard quite a few good things about people getting help here. ive got something pretty wrong with my car. ok, ill just lay it out there. . .
ive got an 89 240 SOHC. i bought the car with a blown head gasket, and the guy before me drove it for a month or two with the head gasket gone. it was just the outside of the gasket at first, but then the whole thing eventually went. well, i got the car and got that replaced and put it all back together, new gasket, new head bolts, new intake mani collector gasket, thermostat and gasket, new spark plugs, oil change, valve cover gasket. well, i got it all put back together, but didnt torque the head down with a torque bar, but i did get it to turn over and run like shit. i got the new bolts put in today and torqued them to spec thinking that was the problem, but now it basically just chugs along at like 450 rpm's. if i give it gas,as soon as i let off it bogs all the way down and dies 50% of the time. but everytime the engine is on now, you can smell gas pretty bad. but theres no smoke anywhere now, so there isnt a blown ring or anything. the i noticed that there were two different sets on injectors, two copper colored ones and two silver ones, but all 4 have red tops. im running out of ideas for what the problem could be, the only other thing i can think of, is that the EGR isnt screwed in at my exhaust manifold. could that make that big of a difference?

cliff notes, car has a lot of new tune up stuff, new headgasket, torqued head down to specs, car runs like shit. no idea what it could be

just ask away for questions i can answer anything if itll help figure out the problem, thanx in advance

check timing

What he said and check all wiring connections. Also check connection with MAF or 02 sensor.

its not the timing, it cant be. i set everything to TDC when i pulled the head off, before i put the head on, i made sure to line up the timing mark for the crank. and the cam hadnt moved at all, and theres only 1 way the cam sprocket can go back on. timing is not off. if it is, its beyond me how it got that way. all the wires and connections are hooked up right. if the timing is wrong, how do i check to see if its wrong?

Timing light will help you check your timing.

im gonna do a compression test asap. and ill try and locate someone with a timing light, but with the timing light, doesnt it just show when the spark plug ignites?

It tells you your ignition timing, which might possibly be the problem or part of it. Did you change your O2 sensor cause it will most likely give you a problem. Due to the coolant being burned it has ruined the O2 sensor. Do a compression check, also running the engine with improperly torqued down head bolts might have warped the cylinder head.

For the Cam timing #1 piston at TDC, the camshaft should have the knock pin at 12 o'clock, links on chain with marks on sprockets, should be towards the Left side of the engine. As long as you did that cam timing should be on.

KA24E is an Interference engine so make sure you got that Cam timing on.

Check your fuel pressure regulator and make sure it works correctly. Have you tried adjusting the idle?

TIMING!! That should solve that problem. be sure to post your new problem 2moro! :wiggle:

i think i may have adjusted the idle, but not sure, i dont know where the screw to adjust is. i need a compression test.

sounds to me like mismatched injectors, since you have 2 silver and 2 copper. I ran in to this problem once and the injectors were the cure.
