View Full Version : Spark plugs
What spark plugs are you guys rnning, and how do you like them? I'm in the process of tuning up my base 1993 240 and am changing out the old sparkers.
What works and what doesn't work for y'all?

Most people recommend NGK R Platinums. I chose to go with Denso Platinums, and after 3500mi I haven't had a problem...So I don't know what to tell you. Also the Bosch Platinum +4's are supposed to be ok, too. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hmmm.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hmmm:'>
Alright I just read the other thread in the tech forum, but it's geared more towards the S14-- I guess our engines are pretty much the same so there shouldn't be issues, but would prefer to stay on the safe side.
NGK V-power (??) V-somethings seem to be good, at least from what I garnered from the other post. What's the difference between V and R-spec? or... V and R-'power' plugs?

Bosch Platinum +4 are my best friend. Although I replaced the o2 sensor at the same time as my spark plugs, I noticed a huge difference. Dunno if it was the plugs or the sensor though. No problems so far, but at least 10000 miles on those plugs. Got me wondering what they look like, I am going to look at them later on today.

yo grab the NGK plugs, our cars were tuned on NGK, and you should stick to NGK plugs... I wouldn't use bosch... and i'm actually not sure if the platinum plugs will help at all..
Broadwayblues - It was the O2 sensor that helped soo much =)

I'm running NGK V Power Racing plugs.
They're like the NGK Platinums, but the spark is colder and it gives better throttle response.
Do nice plugs and wires really matter on a bone stock engine? As long as you get the right temp, I would assume the only advantage would be the pretty color of the wires and saying that you have xx brand plugs and wires. Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I will be replacing plugs and wires shortly.

i've heard 1hp gain for improving both plugs and wires. of course you may recover more than that if they are ineffective.

honestly as long as your buying a name brand plug and/or wires you'll be fine. They all do the same thing. I've run bosch +4's, NGK V-powers, and Denso iridiums. As long as they are gapped the same there is NO noticable difference. I'm pretty sure the NGK's are the cheapest. Bought mine at NAPA for $1.80 a peice. They are what the engine comes with too.
The only major bonus to the other plugs is longevity. Iridium and platinum plugs make the electrode last longer. +4's make the contact last longer. If you want to get technical though I believe that copper is a better conductor of electricty than iridium or platinum. They have to make the electrodes smaller to reduce resistance to compensate for that. (this is Pretty sure type info.. correct me if I'm wrong)
