SC 240SX (http://www.samuraifiles.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=630)

Does anyone have any information on this car? I would like to know more. . . I've never heard of SC'd 240. . .

I search the net for an hour, but found nothing about the SC. All I founed was that it is a JUN-australia/ speedworks car. A yellow 180sx, but it had a turbo from looking at the engine bay, and put down 430rwhp.

wellp, maybe it`s just a really funny sounding turbo with... no... blow off/wastegate hardware?

I dunno what to compare that to in terms of sound... i`ve heard lots of 4AGs, lots of KADEs, lots of turbo cars, and lots of race cars, and the only one that sounded anything like was a full race car, like an elise with lower revvs.

They made the blower setup look like one of those new fangled smog pumps.

I guess thats the end of the SC 240sx mystery.
Oh and tryiian, turbos need a wastegate unless the motor is only supposed to last one run.

I can barely fit an aftermarket fuel rail let alone a blower under the hood...

i wondered that initially but figured a blown 240 was more important.

sadly, i think that pic is a superfarce.

ok.. first things first...

thats a 180SX... think outside the US people... in Japan, a 240 is an old Zed.. and a S13 hatchback, is a 180SX, in Australia, all same...

secondly, spot the Hyperdrive sticker down the side? a little googlin' on the 'Hyperdrive 180SX' should tell you it's Stuey Dicksons car, prepped by Hyperdrive motorsports in Western Australia, and it races in the street car class at Barbagallo Raceway in Waneroo...

Thats the same class the Speedworks supercharged S13 raced in last year, driven by Matt Cherry, it's been built by Alltune Engineering and Speedworks / JUN Australia over several years as a long term shop project.

Most recently, 'Jimmah' has been using it as a drifter, which means he's gotta get used to drifting the S13 chassis, as he's been using an A31 for the last couple of years, and will be again soon when his is completed.

Now... I'm gonna stop typing, and I'll dig up a few more photos, which may or may not shed some more light on this car...

Getting back to the topic at hand, it looks like the supercharger is being driven off that extended, silver pulley visible in the last engine bay shot. Is that a longer pulley mounted on the alternator? What I want to know is why the car has two separate air intakes, one by the supercharger and one right before the throttle body. How does it maintain boost?

And for the record, everyone here is very well aware that the Silvia/240sx/200SX/180SX/ came with KA's, SR's, and CA's. Some people need to work on their sarcasm detection.

In the interests of answering serious technical questions about the supercharger setup in question:

The supercharger is an SRM positive displacement screw-type as Fil said.
It is a BIG unit, and it is mounted down below the exhaust manifold on a bracket and pulley system engineered by Alltune Engineering in combination with Speedworks here in Perth.
It is belt driven like nearly every other supercharger.
It is intercooled.
It has a throttle body on the inlet of the supercharger so that the charger runs 'in a vacuum' when the throttle is closed, the 'strange looking' setup on the intake manifold is an electronically controlled dump valve to allow compressed air in the intake system to escape, not to allow air in.
No, a BOV would not do this job properly, the majority of BOV's are pieces of crap.

Yes, it is seriously fast, and yeah they have had bugs to fix, but the bracket and pulley setup itself is absolute artwork and as someone who has had to help put this car together on a couple of occasions I can say from experience the package has been engineered to go together beautifully.

Alltune have designed the mounting system to suit all the variations of the SR20 block and head and were at one stage considering producing the package as a bolt-on kit for retail sale. No, it won't bolt onto your Pulsar or your Sunny or your Sentra or whatever, but if you pull your SR20 out and put it in an S13 it will.

Which brings me to clearing up the misunderstanding over the photos earlier. The first yellow hatchback (180SX) with "Hyperdrive" on the side of it has nothing to do with the topic of this post, that's a turbo SR20 built by Hyperdrive. The photos Fil has posted are the correct ones, although they don't show any important details (less taking photo of the chick and more taking photo of the engineering, Fil)

Regards,
Obzai

Obsydian
07-25-2005, 11:00 PM
...and in addition to the post above, the photos Fil have posted are of the most recent setup, where the throttle body has been moved from behind the supercharger and put back on the intake manifold to change the throttle response (damn I shoulda noticed that earlier). So now that the supercharger isn't running in a vacuum the dump valve is held open at idle and progressively closed as throttle is applied to build boost controllably on an otherwise linear system.

A standard BOV or gate setup would not allow this level of controllability.

Turbohead
07-25-2005, 11:02 PM
Should also be noted that the JUN engine in question has made over 750hp while turbocharged but as you can imagine it was very much a "top end" type of power band (originally built for drag racing). Bulk torque was needed when the engine was put in the race car for circuit racing which is why Speedworks decided to give the supercharger a try (AJ, the engineer at Speedworks had previously been developing a supercharger setup in various configs on his personal S13 for a number of years)

With the SC fitted The engine now made bulk torque from very low in the rev range to red line (9000rpm) peaking at over 440 ft-lb's

It should also be mentioned that the actual Jun motor suffered some damage at an event in Queensland a month or so back so the engine setup seen running in the vid at the start of this thread was actually a freshened up stock as a rock SR20 with all the bolt ons attached - thus allowing Jimmah to get some driving practice in the car.

This is the first time i've seen a roots blower steup like this. The only way i've seen it is directly mounted to the intake manifold. I didnt even know this was a possibility.
