450hp out of a stock ka24de. no.
450hp out of a built ka24de-t. yes.
450hp out of a stock sr20det. no.
450hp out of a built sr20det. yes.
by buying a 240sx you are pretty much guaranteed to have 'problems down the road', whether you modify it or not.
my advice is to buy a FSM, invest in tools, and start with maintenance on the car.

I have both a KA24DET and now a SR20DET. IMO the SR is the way to go.
For the price of a Turbo kit you can have a swap in your car that will run a lot nicer.
The KA24DET route requires fabrication and sometimes it can be hard to find performance parts. Internals are more expensive, harder to find, and the fact is the KA was not designed for boost. I have friends with very nice KA24DET's but for the price and headache IMO it is not worth the outcome.
In Japan they have been building SR's for over a 10 years the knowledge and developement of products for the SR is unmatched in the 240 world.
Don't get me wrong I really liked my KA but I love my SR.
I am going for 400 rwhp at 19psi on Sunday so lets keep our fingers crossed.

*ding *ding *ding, we have a winner.
I say, to make it easier on yourself, do the 100 mile test.
Then do the 500 mile test. Then do the 1,000 mile test.
After that, do the 3,000 mile test.
That means, drive it for 3000 miles, and see what comes up before kicking yourself in the head for putting something like springs/shocks on your car if you have a timing chain rattle when your timing chain guides have already been removed, or a similar problem.
(I myself have MORE repairs on my 240SX than aftermarket mods, but I have a devilish bad luck S13 which isn't like any other S13 you've seen, so you might not have it as bad)
Good luck!

what do you suggest is the best way 2 lern 2 fix your own car.....?
aznpoopy
07-22-2005, 09:20 PM
here's a plan:
buy or download a FSM (factory service manual)
-the FSM has a 'basic maintenance' section.
-every weekend, do one of those basic maintenace items (changing the oil, coolant flush, changing belts, etc.)
-note you will need to invest in parts, tools, and misc stuff to get jobs done
-as problems crop up, fix them. and trust me... you WILL have problems (that's what the FSM is for)
-after you've owned the car a few months, you should start to get a feel for what you should be doing next.

The engine isn't the only thing that will need attention. The suspension/body should be looked over too. Bushings, alignment, rust, all that kind of stuff too.

they been turboing L series engines since datsuns... ( L series is the... well... dad of the ka... the sohc and dohc ka head bolts right up to some 4 cylinder Lseries small blocks.. the KA is based off the L series)
the sr has its fair share of history as well.... so in "my opinion" i still think there both the same... i just had to add to that....
performance parts are about the same really.... there not hard to find for the ka... i mean a few sources have them but thats all thats really needed... the sr has a bigger following so i guess thats why it may seem that way.... just my opinion....

i is there a bushing set that includes all the bushings for the bottom of my car and what the most used
no there is not.
once the bushings are worn in 95+ 240sx's, the car is essentially totalled.
make sure you don't let your insurance company know, because they will drop you in a heatbeat.
time to sell it to an unknowing owner and find one with more life left in the bushyings.
sorry.

Not that I know of, but start by replacing the worn bushings, it will make a big difference. http://www.splparts.com has a lot of bushings and suspension bits. Also, http://www.pdm-racing.com/ has lots of bushings and suspension kits too.

i THINK Energy Suspension makes bushings for S14s, but im too lazy to check. FSM is your 240 bible, live it, learn it, use it. Alot of problems can be solved by jsut opening the book, n reading. Learn your car now, before you do anything as far as 'upgrading'
And im not used to seeing aznpoopy without his B&W ninja-samurai of death as his Avatar.
Change it back poopyman. actually, when i look at it now, i think its a colored version of the one you had before. Still, CHANGE IT :axe:

I usually try to avoid posts like this, but I'm at a loss here for comprehension, so here's my take on this. Your post reads as follows:
"i just got my dream car 1996 240sx se it bone stock but i have big plans for it.but i dont know if i should change the internals on my stock 2.4 engine or go for the swap sr20det. some of my worries that if i change all my internals will i have problems down the road with the block....? and will i be able 2 get 450+hp with turbo out of my stock block with no problems....? any one who can help......"
You've just purchased your dream car, congratulations. Now put down the issue of ImPoRt TuNeR, wipe the spew off yourself, and pay attention.
If the car is your 'dream car', why do you not even know what the engine code is? I bought my first 240 in 1995, but I already knew everything about it long before then. I'd say some forum members (the intelligent 4%) would also agree that if you've actually dreamed of owning this car you'd have a clue about it. You don't, so I call BS on that. If your dream is inspired by cool pictures in magazines that you jack off to in the bathroom and the 240 was the main one that caught your eye then say so. No need to impress anyone here, you're new, uneducated, and so far ignorant as hell.
Now, you're 16 yrs old. That's a strike two, because you've just gotten behind the wheel of a RWD car and have about as much driver training as a chickpea. Your main goal here is to achieve 450whp, that's strike three, because not only are you young and ignorant but now you've proven to be dangerous, you're going to surely kill yourself and possibly other people with that kind of power. 450whp in a 240SX is simply too much for any kind of regular driving, and even a lot for most sporting events. You don't seem interested in any of that or you would have thrown in suspension and braking concerns, so we'll assume you just want to impress the kids at your school. That's stupid.
Buy an FSM, study it and learn the car. Replace everything that needs it first to get it back to it's OE condition. That means tension rod bushings, tie rod ends, the front crank seal, rear main seal, the massive leak you surely have around the oilpan, bleed the brakes, check for seized calipers and untrue/warped rotors, all the things the car is definitely in need of. And believe me it needs all that and more. Then do a compression test, change the oil, etc and get a feel for the car in it's like new condition. Then go drive it, for a year, under careful conditions, not like an idiot that you kids seem to be behind the wheel of any car. Sign up for a few driving classes, learn car control, get with your local SCCA and do some closed course driving. Then hook up with one of the members here or locally to you that's a skilled driver and has 275-300whp and go for a ride. Then come back and tell us if you feel competent enough to handle your goal of 450whp.
If you think that's harsh, then go ahead with your plan. No one will care when you wrap it around a tree and kill yourself.

in terms of the car i would work on the suspension first ... then brakes... and then the engine... b/c
weak suspension= car going out of control= crash
weak brakes= can't stop= crash
but either way... with 450hp...no matter how good your car handle... you can still crash...if the driver can't handle.
then again people will crash sooner or later in motorsports.

Come on what do you plan on doing with 450+ hp? Slow down and think reasonable like 250. That's enough to plant you in your seat and to beat most cars out there. Now put down the mag and get in touch with reality.

450 in a 240 is more than you can handle
Back in HS I had a 94 trans am it was about 3500-3800 lbs and was about 260-275 at the wheels (auto) That car was a lot for me to handle when i first started driving and it took me a year or so going to auto x to really keep constant control of the car.
I sold it and bought a 99 WS-6 trans am which has more hp in roughly the same curb weight. It was esentially the same car so adapting to it was not very difficult.
Currently my daily driver is an 04 SL55 AMG while the same curb weight it puts down 493hp and over 500ft/lbs of torque and it is beyond starteling when you hit the loud pedal if you punch it below 50 the tires break loose.
now take a car that weighs signifigantly less and throw 450 in it you will kill yourself at your age with a car like that I know because i have seen it happen over and over again. Learn your car, it takes time to do but it is worth it in the long run. After you spend a year or so working on the car and getting the feel for how it handles then you should look into performance, even at that though look at suspension and brakes first. Don't ebay your parts remember you dont want to cut corners on things that protect your ass.

ENGLISH MOTHERFUCKER!!! DO YOU SPEAK IT?!
OMG man. Seriously, above all this car stuff, stay the hell in school.... I'm pretty sure I knew what punctuation was, and how to use it in conversation, WELL before I was 16.
You're telling us that all your lil friends, with new licenses in hand are driving 450HP Evos? I call bullshit.... buy hey maybe I'm wrong... maybe all your friends are rich little punks with no respect for what it takes to earn a living, while I think that's a hugely wussy way to live... no one in such a situation would prolly be inclined to look a gift horse in the mouth, not in this country at least ;)
"down here we drift auto x"
ok, wtf is that? Was this buzzwords thrown together to give the appearance of having some automotive knowledge? So far all you've done is prove everyone right who is throwing u into the stereotype of being a punk kid who's too inexperienced yet to know shit about shit. I'm not saying that's who you are, but that's how you've making yourself look w/o help from anyone else.
Why is it there is such a shortage of true enthusiasts? When I was first learning, I made it a point to be humble. When you want to learn from someone(s), how much help you think you'll get by fronting and copping an attitude? When I started out, I pointed out in every post that I was a newbie, and was looking for guidance and advice. I came with my glass empty, ready to receive whatever knowlege I felt would help me... you come with your glass mostly full, despite the fact that what we'd add will sour the current concoction of inexperience, angst, and attitude.
If you truly wanted to learn, you'd be more humble.
... but it doesn't seem like that's what you really want.
From what you've posted so far, it seems that all you really want is to throw $ at something and beat everyone in streetracing (which is really lame to begin with). The good news is there IS a car just for you. Cheap compared to uber ferarris and such, it's called the Murcielago. Put your bankroll down, get insured, then begin destroying ppl.
Til you get to that point, you'd best learn to be nice, honest, and humble with people you're trying to glean advice from (wow! just like in real life!) instead of being an eThug.

Obviously, if you drift auto x, you'd realize you DON'T NEED 450 HP!!!! Good luck winning first with that much HP in a fairly lightweight chassis buddy. Really, if you want 450hp, get something else, like a Geo Storm and do a powerplant swap. Drag is cool and all, but if you even have thoughts of drifting/auto x, as you say, you will realize that 200rwhp is good enuff.
And i'd like to see how a 16yearold handles 450hp. "Hey guys, wanna see how fast i can go in my car?" SKEET SKEET SKEET SKEET, VROOM!!!! CRASH!!!!!
"oh, brakefade."
then your smirk asian friend would say "pwned"
OH, and if you still want 450hp, in terms of power/cost ratio, domestics are better.
IROC Camaro, El Caminos, Firebird, Chargers, all that good stuff.
I'm guessing but with about 6k, you could probably built up a 450rwhp domestic, as compared to a 450hp SR/KA. In the end, you'll still blow something up.

Who cares? just beacuse you are 16? you will realize how stupid you are once you are 23 and have gotten your license suspended (if you are still alive by then).
you don't need that much power to have fun. you are not showing to others how much hp you have, I assume you bought the car because you liked her.

yo you said it im 16 but my car is a long project it not like im gana swap and turbo it tomorrow it gana take me a wihle 450hp is my goal and yeah suspension breaking is also on my list so dont be surprised when you get smoked by this 16yr old :fawkd: :gives:
Along with that FSM, using the search button can teach you amazing things, also investing in some grammar instruction can be a big plus as well. No, you can't drive for shit, not unless you drive a shifter kart, which I highly doubt that, and if you did. A 240 most likely would not be your dream car neither.
Since you're in miami what gave you the idea a 240 would be able to handle a RX-7 and an EVO. Simply put get a civic, GS-R block, Full Race stage 3 turbo kit. smoke all those cars. then realize "damn i can't stop fast enough" stuff your car into something hard, die slowly. I'll snatch what's left of the turbo system. :aw:
Have your mangled corpse photographed and put online for us to say "pwned" :mephfawk: :mephfawk:

Til you get to that point, you'd best learn to be nice, honest, and humble with people you're trying to glean advice from (wow! just like in real life!) instead of being an eThug.

yo im far from a thug and sorry i didnt no i was in english class but your right street racing is dangerous my older brother lost one of his friend like that. but down here theres only one track and it never open if it was alot less ppl would be doing it on the street. maybe all you guy are right 450hp was a high # but hey you guy said it i dont no what im getting my self into that why i was asking Questions. humble i told you guys i didnt no shit about 240 i just got into them a while ago i was gana get a civic but i ran into a 240 so here i am im not a thug im not a hard ass and i do want to learn the last thing i wanted to do was come of as a dick :)

grammar bitch learn grammar!!!! you already dug a hole as an idiot who won't listen to those who have more experience then you. first things first, if you want to learn about engines, go to tech and read the fucking FAQ you TOOL. Afterwards spend the next month searching this site to learn more about what could happen to your car and how to fix it. Next search online once you have decided on your route of building your car, of what products to go with. No tein basics, nor super streets are good coilovers for your car.

I love people like him. I can see it now.....One day ill be walking through a junkyard and stumble upon a 450hp 240(or in his case a SILVIA) Filled with Import Tuner mags, Boba cups and Initial D soundtracks. I dont really like flaming, but i also dont like newbies calling themself tuners and wanting to be faster than everyone on the street but dont even know how an oil filter works. OH yeah, make sure you change your headlight fluid before you do any of those late night touge runs with your 450 hp car. The last thing u want is crappy head light fluid.

NO WAY!!!!! How could I be I don't own a 450hp Evo, Rx7, or Supra!!
On a serious note...Just slow down w/your hopes and dreams. Spend alot of time looking through all of the pages in this forum(you could search, but sometimes you'll find more than you expect just by going page by page). Before I made my first post I had gone through over 250pgs in this forum just reading and learning, and guess what I still don't a fraction of what these guys know. One thing I do know is that unless your pretty far out there w/your ideas(and trust me your not on this one)it has been covered before. However, in the very unlikely instance that you come up w/an original idea, make a thread for it and you will get "good" (by zilvia's standards) feedback. Just don't take the way they say it to heart(BUT LISTEN TO WHAT IS SAID!) and you should be fine.
p.s. OK 450hp is still WAY TOO MUCH power!!!
