creating dvds for newbes...

ok i just got this dvd burner and havent really made any dvds yet.. i have a few .avi and mpg movie files i want to create dvds with.. How do I do it?? I tried nero (im used to making vcd on nero) but the dvd thing is completely different..

I think standard DVD players can play Mpg. but AVi files. It is a bitch to convert AVI to mpg so just get an avi player and everything should be dandy. But dont take my word on it.
