Is it for heat protection, or sound insulation? Is it safe to rip out?

Both.

Yes, if you don't mind more heat and noise. It's limited, and anything aftermarket won't have provisions for it anyway.

You sure dont need to worry about the heat, the only thing it would shield heat from is your hood, and that part of your car gets plenty of air when you're driving, so it won't overheat your hood, and it could drop underhood temperatures by letting heat get to the hood easier, and escape easier.

and I dont think that it got noticeably louder when i pulled mine off.

Plus it weighs almost a pound I think.

i might be wrong but I heard its in case your engine catches fire it should help put it out some by flaking off and covering the fire.

This is supposed to detach when engine bay catches fire and it's supposed to starve the fire from oxygen.

not only that, but I know aftermarket hoods (especially CF ones) tend to start fading and flaking/peeling if that protectant isnt there- Rob

+3.

It's to prevent DEATH if your engine bay catches fire. The little plastic things that hold it to the hood melt from the heat, the thing drops down and muffles the fire.

Is it Nomex, by any chance? That's just a guess on my part, but the purpose of the material is to put out fires.
