Yeah that sucks. Most likly they will use a disk made out of polymer. On of my teachers had that (3 disks) and says its good, but has his good and bad days. He takes pills when ever his back is killing him. Maybe yours will not be a life long issue. Good luck with it all.

Damn. You think you'll have to change car plans because of the pain that may be felt in riding in a stiff car?
Good luck, and recover quickly.

if eating the pills doesnt work, you can try snorting them... believe it or not it has a more profound effect, if you want to call it that
really though, i compressed 2 of my veterbre like 4 years ago and all i did was go to a chiropracter and now im back to normal (healing time was like 4 months)

Do you have more details about your condition? Which division of the spinal cord? Thoracic? Lumbar? Depending on which tract is involved, effects may vary from loss of certain types of sensation (pain, fine touch, temperature, etc) to your ability or inability to move whatever limb/muscle. Soinal cord injury doesnt necessarily mean you'll be paralyzed from that point down. The nervous system has so many complex pathways its nuts. It can be minor or something worse. But time can play a role, and the sooner you get to the bottom of it, the better. In some cases, whether you take certain types of chemicals within the first eight hours can determine the degree of paralysis, if any.
In any case, good luck.

my dad had a ruptured disc in his back 2 years ago, it kept going out on him over stupid shit (he bent over to pick stuff up once and couldn't stand back up, spent 3 days laying on the floor downstairs jacked on pills cause of the pain) he had a hell of a time before hand, always in pain. His surgery was quick and pretty painless, spent a couple days doped up and not moving a lot, but after that he just took his time and waited it out and did everything they told him (light duty at work for a few weeks, etc. etc.). And let me tell ya, after a few weeks he was absoloutely fine. He has had no trouble whatsoever, and has no pain from it. Hasn't had a single problem with his back since, and he still skis, rides motorcycles/dirtbikes, rides in my s14, and does anything he did before hand. he's careful about things (wears a back belt when lifting, lifts stuff PROPERLY, doesn't lift and twist or do the stuff you're not supposed to, etc.) but no more than anyone ought to be. We've talked to a number of people who have had the same surgery with similar results.
Just do what the doctor tells you, esp. while recovering (take your time, don't try to be a hero and get back into lifting stuff after 2 weeks) and you'll be fine. It also helps to get a massage, go to the chiropractor, or chill in a hot tub regularly. We have a hot tub and it really does make you feel 10x better if you have sore joints/etc. I use it for back and knee problems, its a lifesaver...once or twice a week and i feel like a new man. Either way, good luck and try not to worry...things should be fine.
