View Full Version : ???????Lug Nut Preference???????

OK guys, I need to buy new lug nuts. What do you guys prefer?? I found an old thread with a lot of complaints on Kyokugen. I found a set of 20 black Muteki lug nuts for $30 shipped. Give me your lug nut experiences...
Ideally, I'd like closed end, but I think I may have to go with open end. I will be running a 10mm spacer up front to clear coilovers, so I'll need ext. studs. My friend is telling me to get the 50mm studs, but I want to make sure I have enough thread engagement, so I'm thinking about the 60mm ones. Don't know what to do. I guess a closed end nut would fit on a 50mm with the 10mm stud, since that's only 8mm longer than stock (42mm). Anyone by chance have first hand experience with a 10mm spacer/60mm studs/closed end lug nuts...lol
Let's here some input!

a lugnut....... is......... a lugnut. most of them meet safety requirements of DOT. they all are quite functional...

Wow, a functional lug nut, that's amazing! By experience, I mean with stripping them, breaking them, that kind of thing. The thread I mentioned had people talking about going through 2-3 keys, because they kept stripping them.

I run Kyokugen lug nuts. Never had any problems out of them. I used them on all my Hondas and I'm using them on my s13 as well as the s14. Never even had one strip or cross thread. I've been using them since 2000.

Really? A friend of mine in NC that used to have a 400hp SR used them and never had any trouble. What are you torquing them to?

Make em tighter! lol Most people I talk to go at least 80 ft. lbs., some more like 90-100. Keep mine 85-90.

Yes, that will happen if you use an air gun to put them on. Otherwise there should be no problem. You should not be using an air gun on any alloy type lug nut.

A lug nut is only one part of a 2 part wheel fastening system. You can have the most amazing duraluminum, locking, no stripping, spline drive, heptagonal,...etc lug nuts, but when it comes down to it, you are still tightening them onto studs made from regular old cast potmetal with lots of tiny little airbubbles.
So in the end, the only thing that does matter is to just make sure the lug nuts you use have a seat that matchs that of the wheel you are appling it to.

I understand all about the seating faces. I will also have NISMO extended studs, which are supposed to be stronger than stock studs. The reason I was looking at Muteki is because they are steel. I don't want an aluminum lug nut. I'm not sure what the Kyokugen's are made out of. I think Gorillas are steel also, but not sure.

kyokugen and Muteki are the same lug nuts. they discontinued kyokugen due to it being easly stripped. and changed them to the name muteki. thats why the lug nuts look alike and also the packaging is very similar.
and yes muteki stripps as well but not as frequent as kyokugen.
buy the lug nuts that have the correct seat type as your wheels.

Kyokugen lug nuts are 7 sided (heptagonal), Mutekis are spline drive type...they're not the same. I know the Mutekis are 1008 steel, and the Kyokugens are Chrome Vanadium (Carbon steel with chrome and vanadium added). I really would prefer steel, as I don't trust aluminum lug nuts quite as much. I believe both of these have the same seat, the conical seat face.

The best ones are OEM open ended acorn style. They are the strongest I have ever used. Closed ended are a bad idea if you are going with extended studs, and I don't think they will work at all.
I have used 2 different brands of slim style lug nuts like the Kyokugen and there is a limited amount of torque you can put on them before they strip. I promise you from personal experince that this is not fun. You should be fine with the Kyokugen so long as you use a torque wrench and don't over do it.

I tried using some motegi lug nuts on my spacers/adaptors and they did not fit. The lug nuts threaded onto the stock wheel studs with no problem. Its when I try to use them on the studs on the adaptors they would thread on about a little less than half an inch and then stop. I could thread the lug nuts in some more but I had to use a wrench and a considerable amount of torque, so I just stopped using them before I stripped anything. The lug nuts and studs are both 12x1.25. Since then I just use the gorillas that SPL sells and those thread onto stock studs and the spacer/adaptor studs by hand until you get to the point of tightening down the lug nuts.
P.S. the lug nuts sold by SPL are only $26.

I have 10mm spacers with Rays Duraliminum closed end lug nuts and it fits like a glove. No problems and super lightweight lug nuts and heptagonal lockinging design. The only downside is $$$$.

$100+ for lug nuts = RAPE. Unless of course you got a hookup or this is a "race" car.

Yeah, but SPL's website only shows the chrome closed end lug nuts. I need black and probably open ended lug nuts... I wonder if they can get them, I'll have to call

Ok now I've been told there are 2 different types of wheels. Both with angles seat faces...one with 45 degree and one with 60 degree...is this true??

You guys are fucking morons. This thread was originally about lug nut brand since I had read a lot of bad things about Kyokugen in an old thread. The only other question left is the angled seat question. Are there 2 different angles? 45 and 60?

*edit* BTW, Thanks to all those with helpful replies :) *edit*

5zigen lugnuts are discontinued, but they have black racing which is pretty similar to their orig lugnuts.

unless you have some wierd ass wheels from 30 years ago, any tapered lug nut you buy will work with your wheels.

gorrilla nuts are good but i always break the sockets with my pure Texan strength. i just want some stock lugs now.
and alex is right, this thread can only be worse if you start discussing what color underglows are the best.

Go with Gorilla lugnuts.
Word of advice - make sure you get 2 keys to take off your lugs. 1 key that matches the "key shape", and 1 that is regular. use the regular key to remove all lug nuts except for 'key shape" lugs. This will keep your key shape one from stripping, since their is some play...

Is this correct I am looking at getting the Gorilla nuts have blackracing wheels should be alright? They are narrow fit so will fit in holes. Appreciate the help. :wavey:

i didnt read all of this thread but your supposed to tq the nuts to 80 ft/lbs... drive 200 miles re TQ them.... done....
thats just to answer some of your questions... so... pure texan strength wont... or shouldnt be breaking any lug nuts... nor should your cheap shitty ebay open end lug nutts and keys be breaking.... that just shows that some people are putting your lug nuts on incorrectly....
over TQ nuts will fukc up your hubs... and strip wheel studs over time.... so.. dont be over tq'ing your nuttz...
