Me and a couple of buddy put together some money to pick up a couple of VLSD. I got one for my brother since I don't own a 240sx, but I help him out with his car since he is only 16.. Will I open up his vlsd to make sure everything is fine, put new fluids in there, etc.. and.. I found this..

A very low mile, still shiney clutch LSD. I had a feeling that this last pumkin had something in there. Normal vlsd, you can turn the output shaft the oposite direction slightly.. and I tried for this and couldn't break it.. So he got lucky, now can someone idenify this? I was looking around and can't find a good picture to compare with as to who made the lsd. I didn't find any parts number or anything so comparing it to pictures is the only thing to do. It don't matter, but its interesting to find out.

That's my ATS 1.5 way
Similar, but not quite it. There's one off the list for you.

looks like nismo. imo
rotate the ring gear to see what numbers are on it, maybe you got a nice final drive too
what are the numbers on it??

looks like a 2 way, see there are ramps in both directions, and they look roughly equal.

Coldfire, its very close to your ATS LSD, do you have any more pictures of it, maybe before it was installed?
At first I thought it was a Nismo unit, but I remember the cap has little ribs around the bolts..
I aready put back on the rear cover and its going on tonight. I might open it back up and take down the ring gear number, and count the teeth..
LoL, Nigel, your VLSD is just sitting there waiting for you to put it in use.
Thanks

you lucky son of a......
I once opened a VLSD pumpkin to find out that its a regular "unlimited slip" differential. I was kind of expecting this thread to read more along those lines...

My "VLSD" came with a 4.3 drive and a Nismo 2 way. Came with my front clip for an extra $150. When I first got it I changed the fluid and threw it in. Started hearing clunking noises and I was spinning 3k RPMs in 5th gear on the freeway... I was like WTF :bigok:

my 89 silvia K's has 4.08 out back I believe. On the highway in 5th at like 75-80 im revving at 4K! Sucks on the freeway, but awsome everywhere else. I have a U.S. final drive that I planned on trying out, and I was curious if both ring and pinion are different, or just the ring gear. My VLSD is gonna get swapped with a welded diff for the time being, and I wanted to try out some taller gears.

you need BOTH ring and pinion

Correction:
4:36's out back. Took it out yesterday to experiment with 4:08's. So far, so good. 4:36's are super short! Reminded me of 4:11's in my friends stang.

How many different variations are there?

Why did dousan say 4:6 depending on what tranny you have then?

Why did dousan say 4:6 depending on what tranny you have then?
Because you could have aftermarket gears in your tranny. You could also be running a sequential gear box. You could even have a non-S-chassis motor and tranny in your car.

I have no idea... but the CA powered cars all came with 4.36 rear ends. The Silvia and 240SX both had 4.08. I can't remember what it was, but there was an SUV that used the R200V that used the 4.6 rear end. It did NOT come in an S-chassis though.
thats does looks like a nismo LSD. hmm... nice find man, was it out of a jdm car? alot of them have upgraded lsd's.

I dont think it was a suv...Nissan didnt make any "pumpkin type" diff on SUV's till recently, and even then, they dont use a R200V...are you sure its not the wagon from the JDM market, something like the Stagea? I dont think there was any SUV from the US market with R200V pumpkin.... :-/

Maybe it was a wagon  Might not have been an R200V, maybe just an R200. The ring and pinion is interchangeable. I could have SWORN it was the early 90's pathfinders though..

if I remember right, the diff in an XE pathy is the 4.6 ratio..... the ones in the SE models are an ungodly 6.25

ok so you are talking about a ring n pinion not a pumpkin, i was under the impression of a diff pumpkin. :)

clanks and acts like one. I used it at the last drift event and it didn't crap out like a vlsd.

IIRC it's the front diff on the 4x4 that's the same as the 240.

Its just interesting to know who made it. I still haven't found out and the closest thing to it is the ATS lsd. Still a mystery....

I'm in the same situation as you man.
Ebay special LSD that hooked up way to good to be a viscous.
So anyways, I took my diff apart this week b\c it was banging and clunking real bad, especially when I make a turn from a dead stop, and it looks almost identical to yours. Apon inspection, I noticed that the right output shaft has play in it from in and out of the diff and upon rotation.
Do you guys think new output shafts would fix this?
I was thinking that the splines might be worn; they look kinda shorter than the splines on my open diff shafts.
I sick and tired of the banging sound when i'm pulling out or dumping the clutch;and when I say banging, I mean like a sledge hammer hitting the diff.
I also added subframe bushing collars and new tranny mount, and tightened all the bolts and axel nuts.
So if you guys with Clutch LSD's can give me an idea of what your cars respond like that would be a great help.

Jason
