Well, my freind and I just took the guide out. Process went relatively smoothly, except for me dropping a bit of old sealant in the engine, oh well. My engine has around 100k on it, and this is the first time I've pulled the valve cover. The inside of the engine looks amazing, like new. Anyway..
I was looking at the guide, and realised it is made of metal...not the plastic that everyone complains about. There is plastic, but it's only the part the chain runs over, is that what everyone has a problem with? I don't see how that would snap off and fall into your engine.
Anyway here is a pic, is this the factory guide? Also, ignore the bubbles, that's just water from me cleaning it off.

I've read in a few threads that they were made of plastic and that's what causes the issue? Maybe that's incorrect.

the issue was the metal wasent strong enought to hold. After the plastic wears down enough it falls aprt into two pieces or more.Thats why if u look at a 96 or above head ull see the spot where it bolts looks to be grinded off but was done factory

the *sohc* guides are plastic
the sohc tensioner goes bad and the sohc guides break into little bits.
nobody EVER said this about a dohc engine, and if they did they were misquoting information.

MINE had marking on it from the chain hitting on it.... good thing i took it off,
also i dropped a lil sealent in my engine... long time ago... thought the ticking was from that, but it was from the chain hitting the top guide... but didin't know that, so i took off the oil pan..(i.t w.a.s v.e.r.y h.a.r.d & t.i.m.e c.o.n.s.u.m.i.n.g)...yours prolly should come out when you do oil change...(do it now)...haha
