View Full Version : Knocking/Ticking and white smoke

We swapped in another DOHC into my car and when we started it, it sounds like shit. Appears to be a ticking/knocking noise. It's not the timing chain. Also, when I rev it up, white smoke comes from the exhaust manifold.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
I searched but couldn't come up with anything pertaining to my situation.

u know the usual answer is how many miles on the new/used motors... and do u think it would have a blown HG? how loud is the knock?

I forgot to adjust timing, so I'm going to do that right now.

Actually, it was a myriad of things. I first set the timing, some of the noise went away. Then I plugged the hole where that line from the AIV unit connects into the downpipe (silly me, I forgot to plug it in the first place). After that, the loud knocking noise went away. It was just an exhaust leak. I then took off the upper timing chain guide.
All is good now.
