It can make your car run real rich which obviously is not optimal for the most performance from your car. You should regain some lost ponies, and definately gain a few mpg.
Also find out what error code the ecu threw and check it out to be sure thats the problem
The ECU only looks at the O2 sensor when you're "cruising", like driving on the freeway at mid-throttle. At WOT (pedal-to-the-metal), the output from the O2 is ignored. So a bad O2 sensor will cause mileage (and emissions) to suffer, but WOT performance won't be affected.
Why do you think the light is being caused by the O2 sensor? Have you done a code check on the ECU?
Sorry this isn't DIRECTLY related, but on the topic, which section of the MAF do you need to clean if it is indeed just a dirty sensor? Is it just the plug on the outside, or do you have to take it apart and stuff?
I'm running really rich (or so I diagnose from the strong gasoline smell and bad mileage) and am trying to find the source of my troubles...

My car was running rich and that was the first thing that I changed. Took care of it right away. I went to Autozone and got one for less then $30. Mileage and performance went way up. Made a huge difference! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':look:'>
