Yeah, as some of you know I'm actually pretty young. I've made a few of these posts before, but it's come down to two cars: 1989 Supra 5 Speed Turbo, or a 1985 MR2 5 Speed. I really need inputs because I'm getting one within the next week.

Now the Supra is fast of course, and seats 4, but the gas is horrible.

The MR2 has great handling, great on gas, but it seats two and it's a little slow.

I know my limits with cars, and I won't push the power of the car past my limits of handling it, so I wouldn't worry about "too much" power. I have a passion for both cars, so I'm in a small groove. I know the after market of both cars too. Any one wanna put in some words?

PS: Don't say get a 240, because I don't wanna look like every other teen driving one, saying they drift. I don't wanna drift, I wanna grip :)

if the supra is a MKIII? the one before the fast and furious version i would go w/ that cuz it looks a hella lot better and has lots of potential

but the GZE is pretty dope motor as well

My GF drives a '89 Turbo 5 Speed Poopra. Gotta love it with the coilovers and large wheels. But it's still a very heavy car. Handles decently, would not auto-x with it. It's a highway monster / lapping car.

i will choose supra as it has more power, more space to modify it

^^^ More space to modifie it to push its 3600lbs curb weight. A aw11 with a swaped 20valve for less then a stock mk3, will run circles around a 300hp mk3.

Mr2 is a great car but someone difficult to handle, very light in weight. I believe the lightest year was an 85, no options what so ever.

MKIII, is a great car also. They will go on damn near forever, with the exception of your blown head gasket, runs great. Engine and tranny can take a huge amount of abuse.

Both great cars. Aftermarket supply is plentiful, but then again at their age, they tend to start falling apart, if they have not done so already. But yeah, if you want more room.. get the supra, if you want more agility, get the mr2. The 240 isn't a bad car either, just because you like something..doesn't necessarily mean you're a "wanna be drifter", as long as you do your research. Get what makes you happy.

Getting any car that would make you a "wannabe-anything" would not deter you from getting it, if you really cared about getting a good performance car.

you know you can 'grip' in a 240 too, right? :bigok:

i would get the mr2

God created the supra, the worlds fastest car, it only took him 4 tries to get it right.

so if you're not gonna get then MkIV, then don't get a supra at all.

get the aw11

the weight of the supra will be your downfall yet it has 4 seats. The MR2 is great yet it only has 2 seats. I would go with the MR2 although you may need 4 seats sooner or later. Or try to find an all trac celica.

i know you didn't want to hear anybody tell you to get a 240, but they really are the best bang for the buck, especially fora young driver. mkIII, as everyone has said, is heavy as shit. from experience, it will be tough to find an aw11 that is not a shitbox, as the newest one is as old as the oldest 240 basically. with the 240, you get the newest, fastest, most balanced, all around car you can get...all for super cheap. the most you will save getting an aw11 over an older s13 is a couple hundred bucks, which is inconsequential really. go 240, you will not regret it.

:werd:

tho the old boxy MR2s are IMO, one of THE UGLIEST cars ever conceived.
Move up one gen of either car and you're good :)

the mr2 is very hard to work on i sold mine cuz i could never fix the oil leak plus it was ugly. the supra is a nice car but why are you trying to choose such old cars? try getting a new car because you will want a newer car after you get one of your two choices specially if you are young do you really want to waste your time getting a car working rather than upgrading it?

Man, those two cars aren't choices...

The MKIII Supras suck - maintenance and problems with a old turbocharged car will kill you unless you are prepared to spend some major $$ if stuff breaks (very likely). The only way I see a MKIII as a good purchase is if you are planning a complete rebuild of the car. They can be very nice but lots of $$.

As for the 85 MR2, save your money, it'd be hard to find one that isn't falling apart and even then they'd be pretty crappy condition. Again, it is only a car you want if you are planning to work on it.

Save up for something better. Get something reliable if you need something to daily drive in like a old Civic or Accord.

astagfirullah you have a girl friend!?!? haha j/k

i almost bought myself one of those mr2 and then i released that it was one of the ugliest looking cars in the world...ir reminds me of fiero and i haaaate fieros...if anything go for the supra...

you say you dont want to get a 240 because youll look like a bandwagon jumper...well why do you care??? if youre a car enthusiast and actually care about your car and the work you put into it then get the 240...screw everyone else and what they think...

Exactly like I said above.

Me personally, I could care less what you drive. It wouldn't matter if you were driving a Mr.T Bigwheel, doing plastic wheels burnouts, and screaming, "I pity da fool!" at the top of your lungs. YOUR car would still mean nothing to ME.

Realistically though, why not ask people who know a little more about Toyota's, like (OMG, I can't be serious, GASP) A Toyota Forum! When all is said and done it should come down to your personal opinion. If you are asking us what car to buy, then next you'll be asking what color to paint it, what bodykit, what wheels, etc., etc., etc. Get what you want, not what a Forum or Magazines decides is cool for you.

Easy, The toyota community consists of ALOT(not all) of elitests that only think their toyota is the only real car out there(Look at supra and lexus owners). Since I find the nissan community to be alot more open minded, I asked you guys. You guys gave me alot of opinions. so right now I'm steering toward the supra. Btw...if I wanted a honda, I would've asked my parents for the 89' SI that's just sitting in front of the shop.

I would rather walk that drive an 89 supra. They are super ghetto cars. I'd take an Mr2 over that car any day of the week. I tend to stay away from cars that attract people on welfare. :ugh:

Latest gen supra is the only one to have..and that's it. The Mr2 is the good choice here..but find a clean one with less than 140K miles on it. You'll be havin some fun in the mountains.

While I haven't driven the supra, I have driven an early supercharged MR2.. that thing gives you a great driving experience. I can't imagine the supra being anywhere as nimble as that.

:loco: and it comes with the high likelyhood of a blown headgasket!...get the aw11, you have the option of going with a 4agze,20v silvertop,20v blacktop...w/ the mk3 your only left with the option of a 1jz (which isnt bad) but mk3's weigh a lot too

Maybe, but my GF daily drives a turbo Supra, with some Tein coilovers, wide tires and it handles pretty decently, on road racing circuits. And swapping a MHG is a must if you want to keep the 7M, if not, 1JZ the and forget your worries. That engine can take QUITE the beating.
