View Full Version : Proposal to End the "Been There" Plague

After seeing DSC's post and several others recently, I admit I too am becoming tired of the same questions asked repetitively (often on the same page, but always w/n three pages of each other).
Problem #1: They don't really get answered properly b/c they were answered before;
Problem #2: No one cares - except the guy asking the question, again;
Problem #3: There is no way for those of us who have seen the definitive answer in the past to say, "Search for..." b/c the search is apartently on the fritz;
Problem #4: SCC and their "Silvia" fetish of late has caused scores of 15 year olds, lookie-loos, and potential assets to our community to invade the board with these same questions;
Problem #5: Vetrans are no longer willing to deal with it and are increasingly frustrated with the board turning to sh!t around them.

I used to take time to answer or read "red-top vs. black-top" b/c there was misinformation or a lack of information on the topic (I both taught and learned). Same with other topics. The problem is that I am sick of this question, so I don't answer it anymore. I used to chime in when something was wrong, now I don't even do that b/c I never even open that post. So now, I care so little that I probably wouldn't even link you to heavythrottle or Unstable. That sucks. This type of behavior from vetrans is exactly what I hated about FA! The "been there, done that" mentality is the reason I came to Zilvia (well, that and the sense of community that 240 Chat board provided).

My proposed solution(s) is as follows:
1) Use the Archives!!!! Populate it with informative posts so that when that kid asks about the differences b/n an s13 and s14 SR (SCC got it wrong! ), we can just say, "Check out the archives" rather than re-answering or avoiding the question.
AND
2) (do-able?) - If someone who knows what they are doing and has access to the old archives goes thorugh and finds the good posts on certain topics, brings them onto the current tech page, we evaluate them for worthiness and stick them in the archives.
AND/OR
3) Post new threads for the commonly asked questions with a sticky so that anyone with knowledge of the area can add to it. When it has sat for a while, have a few knowledgable people review the info, cut out the BS, whining, errors, and chat (honest differences of opinion b/n educated members should be left in) and then move it into the archives. These posts should have a special note that they are for the archives so people that would otherwise pass over the topic will reveiw it and add, where appropriate.

My list of "oh God, not again topics" includes:
1. The differences in SRs
2. s14 - Zenki to Kouki... what do I need?
3. Offsets
4. SR Swap how to
5. SR prices/distributors
6. Strut bars (f/r)
7. Sway bars
8. Coilover options
9. KA+T how to
10. Strawberry face kits for 240s - how/where
11. 5-lug swaps
12. Brakes - the basics (+/- pads, rotors, lines)

Those with an opinion, please chime in!

Archive and FAQs is there for everyone. However, I do go through EVERY post there and will delete your post if its not a quality or informative post. I want the Archive and FAQs section to be VERY quality posts. If you post something here it needs to answer every aspect of the question/concern stated.

Veteran behavior does matter allot. So you "Veterans" its up to you NOT to bitch about every little thing but to instead set examples and be a role model so we can set examples of how our forum is ran and what we expect as far as quality and behavior.

Also, you can read my reply in the Post started by DSC.

Can you still get to the old topics or are they completely lost? I had a ca18det post that I can't find that answered almost all questions and i would like to see it in the archives. I really doubt i have the time/patience to ever do another one like it

That clears up alot. I thought West was the only one who could add to the Archives & FAQ section. I don't consider myself expert enough to add much but I 100% agree with Hipposleek. The negative attitude as of late is coming more from the vetrans than the newbies and for good reasons but it's up to the people who have been here to set the right example. You have to especially consider that the new guys don't know this stuff, so to them they seem like good questions.

One thing that annoys me a bit, is that no-one even tries to do any of their own research anymore. If someone comes to this board saying "what is an sr20det?" It's pretty obvious that they haven't looked at all for themselves. I'm not saying eveyone is like that, but it's getting to be more and more common. I mean think of the drifting thing. All you have to do is type in drifting to a search engine and BOOM 139872857393285 hits! Come on, you can do better than that.

On the other hand, yes, we all have been ignoring posts from people that probably are trying to help themselves aside from just asking the question on the board. I'll try to answer more posts that I really don't care to look at if people will start doing more research on their own. I think that's fair.

Once again.....have a working search feature
I know that "newbies" will still post questions over and over but it would surely reduce the number of repeat questions. Yes, I am one of the newbies that posts to "what are the differences in the SR20DET engines?" to answer their question. Yes, they could find information in using google or some search engine to find their answer but they found their way to this board to ask that question and it isn't fair to them to be ignored because the question was asked last week. They weren't here last week they are here now.

Just my opinion. I love these boards there is a ton of useful information here and knowledgeable members here but it doesn't do anyone a damn bit of good if they don't get their questions answered, or are able to find a thread from last month with their exact situation taken care of because the search doesn't work. I mean all that a search feature needs is coding that works.....hell you can "view source" from another board that has a working search to get that.

Mike
