Hopefully one of you can answer this question easily, I was reading the howto on http://garage.projectraine.com/ for the upper guide removal. In that guide it says I have to remove the distributor, but do I have to do that if I'm only removing the guide, not messing with the tensioner? Thanks

the upper one is easy, no need to remove distributor,
that's for the other one...

Thanks, and for the valve cover, I apply sealant where the semi circles are? The walkthroughs are a bit confusing because they both talk about the other guides/tensioners, and I'm not dealing with any of those.

yeah, you put sealant in the semicircles.

as long as you're taking the valve cover off you should do both guides and check the tensioners.

removing the distributor is no big deal. just mark it with a little bit of paint so you put it back in the same way.

Well, I know the noise is from the upper guide, and it's not even making much of a noise, I might just open it up for the hell of it.

One other thing, should I worry about my engine being exposed to the air/dust? I don't know if I should just wait until my next oil change before i do this, I don't want crap floating around my engine.

air and dust?

if you're going to leave it open i suppose you could just cover it with a towel or something.

that's not really a concern though. you can do it all in an hour or two.

Yeah I'm just paranoid, I wouldn't be leaving it open longer than an hour or so (I doubt).
