Anyone ever done it before and how comfortable was it? This august I'm going to be driving from north dakota to washington state and the trip is like 1300 miles one way. I'm trying to decide whether to take my car or to take one of my parents vehicle.

Damn, take the 240, who knows what kind of fun roads you'll find! I've driven my S13 all over Ontario and the eastern 1/3 of the US, and never really thought to myself that I needed a bigger or more comfortable car. Of course, 2 people is the absolute max and I'm rarely sober or driving slowly, so you'll have to decide for yourself.

Make sure you bring some icy-hot for your knees if you are over 6 ft...mine lock up on me after 10 hours... lol
other than that, should be fun !
Depends on you car and how its set up. It'd be torture to go on that long a drive with a harsh suspension, uncomfortable seats and not a good working AC system. Not to mention if you have an exhaust the constant droning.
Also, on a long trip like that you are bound to pick up tons of rock chips and scratches all over your paint. So if you care about your car's exterior condition, that's a no-no. I've seen cars driven cross country and the front end looks like its been sandblasted to hell.
Decide for yourself what you want to do. Personally I'd only do it if I absolutely had to drive. Otherwise rent or drive a nice comfy car, relax and no need to worry about your own car.

I just have to remember to put the cruise control on or my foot goes numb from pushing against that heavy spring.

Yeah, I can't decide. I've got a stupid fart can muffler that I bought back in my confused ebay days but it came with a silencer that I've never put on before, maybe that would take care of the exhaust. I've got espelir springs with blown struts that will be replaced with a set of kts coilovers in a month or two, and I'm used to a harsh ride but I'm not sure if the lady going with me will appreciate it much, haha. And my paint job is already kinda going to shit, I painted it myself a year and a half ago and it was my first project so paint is starting to peel around the edges of the windows and stuff. Maybe then I would have an excuse to get a body kit and paint it again, haha. Damn it would be fun to take it through the mountains though. That and to show a buddy from washington that bought a civic the beauty of nissan and what he is missing driving a fwd car. So many decisions...

I drove from San Diego to Boise and back in an S14 with a recaro speed, n1 catback with no resonator and some pretty soft lowering springs.
it was a blast, and Im going back in a week or 2 in a different S14 with a louder exhaust, no stereo and stiffer suspension. I think I'll leave the Recaro at home this time though.

are you going with more than two people? if you are, it sucks for the person in the back seats in a 240
morpheus8486
06-07-2005, 07:49 PM
As of right now it's just me and one other person. I wouldn't even consider taking my 240 if more than 2 people were going. Nissan should put a disclaimer on 240's saying that the backseat is for insurance purposes only.

I hoping on a good, long 2 week+ road trip by the end of the summer.
From Michigan, down to Texas to see my girl, over to San Deigo to see some cousins and also show off what they coulda had :Owned: Then it's up the California coastline, over through Yosemite (i know, 3" straight thru exhaust and National Parks, morally, don't mix well.) I hope to find my way over to Colorado through some desolate state highways in Nevada. Then from there, it's Denver straight home. It's a lot of driving in two weeks.
Mapquest sucks because they won't let you make "roadtrip" like maps, only point A to point B, whicn in my case, are both the same address :)
Anyway, I'm a little skeptical about it for the reason that my engine still isn't here, and when it does get here and my car is finally running, it'll only leave me 3 weeks or so to "feel it out" and make sure that everything that's gonna go wrong with it, goes wrong within a 20 mile radius of my house.
I've thought about flying, but fuck that. Driving a car you love to drive is half the fun. Seeing people you love and scenery that takes your breath away is the other half.
Oh yea, and as far as my car's condition goes: I've got Cusco Zero-2R's (8k, 6k), stock bushings, Espelir JGT500 exhaust, one of the quieter on the market, no A/c, no cruise unless i can find a way to hook it up mechanically and electronically, stock interior (hopefully I can get ahold of an S14 seat before the haul, my back will kill otherwise), and stock paint.
Any words of advice from those who have been there, done that?

I drove to South Bend, Indiana from MPLS (500 miles), drove in DD1 Chicago, came back after the event... total of 1200 miles prolly. Drove in a Sparco Evo with HE's and a propper gutted interior. Don't worry about it, it goes by fast.

Anyone have any tips on convincing a lady to drive with me when she is trying to convince me to fly? Flying sucks other than being fast. I think it would be way more fun to drive and everybody needs to experience a road trip at one point.

Things can turn ugly quickly. Especially on a rough ride and if shes not used to it. :barf: Your call dude.

Haha, yeah I dunno. She says she's down for it and thinks it will be fun but keeps telling me it might be cheaper to fly, but I did the math and it will be roughly about the same. Wouldn't be as much fun though.

Im roughly 6' 1" and my knee's go out on a trip from DC to Detroit. No Cruise, droning exhaust, and 4 hours sleep dont mix on a bright and sunny day on the 8 hour drive. Constantly squinting even with sun glasses. Awful. Other then that it was pretty sweet driving back and forth when I lived in DC. Penn and Ohio highway patrol are awful as well.
When I first got my car in DE my parents flew out to get me. Dad then drove while my mom sat shotgun. I sat in the back seat of the 240 the entire trip home from Delaware to Michigan. Yea it sucked.

Did a 2000 mile trip in my s14 with no cruise, it was fine. Just don't accidentally mash the gas while looking at the cd player and then get pulled over.

I have driven my turboed s14 with dul n1's and Tein He's from San francisco to TJ, Seattle, Reno, Vegas and yea it is tiring but if you have good company... it's fun.. and especially when u think of all the mountain passes you'll drive through.... and i dunno if the girl who is riding with you is your GF.. but nothing beats getting head while u drive..... :boink:

it is not fun at all to drive long distance in a 240 without cruise control. Hurts ur ankle like a mofo. Worst part is ur lower back. And if you have exhaust, ur ears are going to ring. I hate driving long distance yet my school is like 8-9 hours from home. So whenever there is a long break I drive home.

I'm 6"1' and I managed fine, I just get out and walk whenever I see a place worth walking.
morpheus8486
06-08-2005, 03:13 PM
Yeah, I'm like 6'1" too and I figure if I take as many chances to stretch as I can, pack some good tunes and lots of water and cigarettes I'll be golden. Lately my cruise control has been working like half the time I drive it which sucks, I'll have to figure that out. I can't wait to drive through those mountain passes. Shit, I just can't wait to see mountains again. I'm tired of being able to see for miles and the highest point in the city being man made, pure garbage. ND sucks.

06-08-2005, 03:47 PM
Yeah I wouldn't imagine that a 240 SX would be too much different than an integra. I drove one of them loaded with shit from Denver to hiladelphia twice ad it wasn't too bad. I actually think that the 240 has mre room. By the way, I am 6'3" so comfort is hard for me to find in an import. ND does suck!!!!!!

i've taken my S14 on a few road trips, alwasy a pleasure. i have suspension a lot of people have called harsh(teil coils) but i've never found it to be a problem, even on long drives. i like to have one of my cars wherever i go just in case i find a nice road or a photo op. just throw your baggage in the boot and keep a cooler of drinks and snacks in the back seat.

06-15-2005, 01:33 PM
the only problem I found with road trips is the seats are not comfortable, you will notice the pain from your legs right around 600 mile mark..
oh this is in the s14....base model...
zenkiDori
06-15-2005, 02:34 PM
i have an S14 base model and everyone says my seats are the most comfy 240 seats they've sat in, including me. however my seats were also slightly different than my buddy's base model as well. strange.
but yeah, i once went on a impromptu 10 hour road trip with my girlfriend because we were bored and i drove the entire time, felt great.
m0rex
06-15-2005, 03:35 PM
Well i have done a lot of suspension work on my car and im always scared that something might just pop out. For some reason im scared of driving more than 1 hour straight i just dont feel safe. I always feel that something is just going to break or snap or loosen up. I always carry a 17mm socket that fits most of my supension and my lock tool for my rims.
Noise sucks too... i hate my exhaust right after i drive 15 min at 3,000 rpm constantly. I would love to do a long road trip though but i need a better sound system on my s14 to cancel my exhaust out. The back seats are also the worse designed seats ever. I tried to go to sleep on them and it was impossible i've slept in the back of a lot of rear seats and never had a problem.

The 240sx is not a DRIFT CAR, it is a car that some choose to get sideways in. However it was originally marketed by Nissan as an economy car geared mainly towards WOMEN! Your ignorance is blinding. We're not feeding you bullshit, we're feeding you facts. The more you choose to ignore the facts, the longer you will remain ignorant.

for what it's worth, i see high school girls, career women, and old grannies in 240's more than i see "drifter tuner guys who are in the import scene"

I drove my 240 from WA to VA in 5 days. No cruise control. After two days, my right foot hurt like a mofo, hurt to walk for about an hour after getting out of the car. When I was done in VA, I had my car shipped back to WA. 3k miles one way. I had Tein coilovers at the time. The roads from South Dakota on east were hell compared with the west. I'd never take my 240 that far again. Car held up great, it just wasn't comfortable on that long of a trip.

Well when I take the 400mile trips to see my gf, everything is great. I just re-up on some D batteries for the radio, put the boombox in the "drift car" and Im set to go. The only shitty part is the boombox changes stations manually rather then electronically, so if I lose signal or a commercials, it becomes tedious.

Ok i got a really old car stereo like the ones that weigh 20 lbs and only play fm and am. I then got a long cable and hooked it up right to the battery so i could turn the stereo on after that i somehow wired my headphones direct to it. For my antenna i used a cable and stuck it to my roll cage and it worked!.. Only 6 cables 5 min of wiring. Yes its stupid but i couldnt find any other way of not getting bored for 2 hours my ipod was/is dead so i didnt have any alternative.
I've taken my tundra sideways and my jdm tyte vip honda odyssey with coilovers sideways a lot of times. :keke:

That’s pretty ghetto but how about the following
1. No radio or speakers- Alternative = boombox
2. No dash- Alternative = zip tie the gauge cluster where it used to be
3. No heat- Alternative = heat emitting from the firewall
4. No A/c – Alternative = 2-55a/c, 2 windows 55mph
5. No seat belts- Alternative = place one foot where the dash used to be, just incase.
6. No windshield wipers- Alternative = Rain-X
7. No windshield wiper squirters, Alternative = clean it before you drive
8. Speedo , alternative = Visual perception speedometer
That’s just a couple
Here is the car before I sold it. Just look at all the luxuries.

That was/is a badass car. Theres really nothing bad to say about rb series engines sr's i never really liked them but all nissan engines kick ass expecially the rb26. Ka-ts are the shitznitz though, so swap it out back to usdm-t lol. Atleast you probably have a cd player and a full interior to do some daily driving on. Going around twisties is funner than going fast in a straight line anyways.

I drove my 240, fully stripped/gutted w/N1 duals and strait pipe, springs, etc. 75miles from Seattle to Bellingham and back every weekend of this entire school year and it was a blast. Just make sure you have a great sound system and lots of tunes to go with it, fix that cruise control, and you'll be fine. The seats are the only part I would compain about but I have a WAY messed up back. The 240 is a cargo hauler like crazy - I packed my entire dorm room in my car and got it home in one trip except for the bed and desk! Go for it man, it'll be fun. Two words...ROAD DOME!
I drove from Wisconsin to LA, with me, my brother and my dad all in my SR-powered S13 with no ac, no cruise, and no power steering, carrying everything I owned that I was taking with me to move to LA. Between Vegas and LA it was so hot, it was cooler to keep the windows up, and my car was overheating so I took out the Silvia panel, and turned the washers into a radiator water spray. The wiring harness also fell apart, and my car died less than one block from my destination. Crazy road trip. So I bought an Evo to supplement the S13 after that.

I honestly don't care who he is. I have nothing against him whatsoever anyways. I just hate it when people don't understand what i say from the start, then progress to tell me to stfu from it. Sorry if my post was misleading. I meant like, 240s are cars to go drifting in, while camrys and accords are for long roadtrips. Did i ever say 240s ONLY drift? No. There must be a seperation, and a way to categorize cars. What other category would I put the 240 into? I KNOW it isn't roadtripping.

Why not? Perhaps I would understand you better if you made some sense. Please explain why the 240 isn't good for roadtripping. I personally drive mine all up and down the Eastern coast and have never had a problem with it. It's plenty confortable, the AC works very well, and it gets good mileage. Now I'm sure if you stripped out the sound deadening, removed the AC, heavily modified the engine, and tried to make it specifically set-up for track use, then sure it might not be good for roadtripping. But neither would any other car customized the same way.

To me a s14 looks like a rwd camry. So it should take trips the same as a camry, unless its raining.

Why? I don't know about you guys, but to me, a camry feels much more comfortable with 4 people in the car than a 240. Roadtripping with <2 people, it'll be fine i guess. But even then, the suspension IS set up more like a sports car, and it'll be a bit rougher.

Get a s14 with blown shocks, cruise on the highway, and it just floats like a boat. I have a bunch of spare blown s14-s13 shocks/struts, if any one's intrested.

Hellspare: being RWD does not make a car a sports car. the 240SX was never meant to be a sports car, and it isn't one. if you think it is then you must not drive many sports cars. to borrow a quote from a friend, the 240 is at most, a "secretary sports car". it's just a peppy little coupe that was marketed towards women. my S14 was very comfortable in stock form, and now with coilovers the ride is a bit more stiff, but it still has cruise control, power steering, AC, heat, power everything, etc. it drives just fine thru rain and snow as long as you aren't riding on slicks, just like most other cars. even if you stick a bunch of "JDM tYtE" shit on your car, it's still the same thing, just with a little more go. now if you have stuck a big exhaust and 10/8 coils and strip your interior and remove all the AC, PS, heat, radio etc. of course it's going to be uncomfortable, but that's your fault and it could just have easily been done to a camry.

wrong dude... dead wrong. i bet you'd say the silvia was a sports car. difference? power. power does not make a sports car a sports car. look at the miata.
i own a sports car because it is build for the explicity purpose of going fast and having fun. i have no back seats and soon i'll have eight cylinders pumping power through a six speed tranny...
you're saying that mustangs, GTO's, and Fbodies aren't sports cars? course not, cause thats an obvious lie.

Ask yourself this: Comparing stock to stock, what is more comfortable? A camry or a 240? I didn't say it was a sports car because its RWD, where'd u get that from. Sure you can do the same to a camry. But will it perform the same?
I believe you when you say it is comfortable in stock form. In fact, ANY car is comfortable when you drive it for short distances. You come and tell me its more comfortable driving a 240 for 700 miles than a camry, i'd slap you.
As with the term "sports car", its a sports car if you treat it and drive it like one. If all cars were the same, why are 240sx's listed under sports compact/coupe, while accords and camrys aren't? Why do 240s have 2 doors instead of 4?

i'd say they are about the same for the 2 door.

honda civic coupes, preludes, celicas, scion tCs and other cars are in the same catagory. none of which i would consider sports cars. sport(y) coupe is different.
Why do 240s have 2 doors instead of 4?
because they are coupes.
power does not make a sports car a sports car. look at the miata.
duh. many things go into making a car a sports car. miatas are great ones, 240s aren't.
i own a sports car because it is build for the explicity purpose of going fast and having fun.
except that it wasn't.

To get back to the original topic I drove my S13 from NY to NC and back, 14 hours worth of driving and the way back I had bald 255 eagle F1 GSD3's with an Apexi N1 dual, test pipe, and a hot shot header. I just loaded up my mini disc player and got some mt.dew and some caffiene and went. I loved driving my car, and still, I cant see where the stock S13 seats are horrible. Although I am working on some stock X type seats. I take my car whenever, and where ever I can, and now with my 2nd S13, Im set.

Way to bring it back undercoverdjay. And damn everyone else for whoring out my thread comparing 240's to camry's. Anyways, I can't wait for the trip. And now I've got some pimp 15" zero offset black meshies to roll on (woot!) so that might help out the ride quality a bit and I wont have to put the miles on my good tires.
