View Full Version : Should I buy this SR20DET?!?!

I found this SR20DET motor for about 1500 and was wondering if it's worth getting it, but the downside is it has a few problems as followed:

1. He thinks the ecu is messing up, its throwing the coolant temp code even though the sensor has been replaced three times.

2. So right now when it hits full boost it starts to "pull timing" (What does this mean?)

So what do you guy's think? And how much would another ECU cost?

-Thanks,
Mike

Enough that it's not worth getting that sketchy motor.

There's a ton of stuff you'll need besides just a a pulled motor itself. You're much better off just hunting for a good motorset, or better yet, a full clip, from a reliable source. If you try to go cheap this way, it'll actually cost you more in the end to get all the various hoses, harness bits, random parts, and other things you'll need to get the job done.

i forgot to include the stuff coming with the motor : motor, tranny ecu, wiring harness, maf ignitor coilpacks, 3 ' downpipe and turbo elbow, smic and piping and im pretty sure he'll include the hoses too. and this guy got his motor from a clip that he got from Phase2

If you like headaches, problem solving, piecing things together, spending more money fixing things you didn't know was broken, and going past your projected time frame, go for it.. otherwise buy a clean running motor from a reputable shop with a startup warranty and tech support.

yah buy it, why not go jdm... and deal with the hassle.. its a cool thing tho, to have the blow off sound...
and you'll definetly get points for having the sr20 in ur crew... so buy it. or better yet stick with ur KA

I would stick with the KA if it wasn't messed up but i found another one for 200 bucks and im deciding between a KA and a SR. More opinions would help. And again this guy got this motor from Phase2motorsports

Depends, you want power or not?
If you do one motor comes built for turbo, one doesnt and will require building.
If you dont, well that pretty simple.

And as for JDM comment, your driving a Japanees car, talk like that would think you own a GM or Ford "in your crew" , KA, CA, SR, RB they are all Jap motors who cares.

Overheating can come from alot of things, especialy blown head gasgets, faulty thermostats, dammaged waterpumps ectr. If hes tried that many replacments its more than likely an engine fault, and if he has tried that many times overheating it that many times hes probably caused some serious engine dammage doing so (IE cracked sleeve's or blown head gasget)

As the rest have said, go with a front clip or a full package that includes everything with a start up garantee from a reputable company, 9 times out of 10 youll save money.

Just remember CA's and SR's are design for a turbo and stock can hold alot of punishment if tuned right with the right bolt ons, KA will require forged pistons if you want to make any sort of decent power and along with a turbo kit and all the extra's you need along the way to get it to run F/I and will cost as much if not more than a simple CA or SR swap with twice the amount of work.

don't buy that sr, that sounds very sketchy, i do not think the ecu is fowled... why do you think hes getting rid of the motor?

Its my motor hes talking about, its never been overheated it just runs rich as hell and floods the motor when it hits full boost. Taken it too a very reputable local shop and they pretty much assured me the fault lies in the ecu or wiring. I am getting rid of it to make money for an s14. Just thought id clear that up, Im not out to cheat anyone, Ive been completely upfront and honest i completely understand if he chooses not to buy it. Anyway thats all i have to say, just didnt want to come off shady.

Props for not being a dick about what people have posted :)

Now people have two sides of the story, they just have to figure out the third side for themselves ;)

yup. If you can source out an ECU, try it. I'd stick with the underratted KA. You're driving a USDM 240sx, not a Silvia. Regardless of what you do to try and convert it, it's still a USDM 240sx. Y not embrace that and stick with AmericanMarket parts and stuff?

dont start some debate!
ka is fun i will probably go KAT on my DD its a fun ride but sr is so cheap and easy to find parts its great.
it has nothing to do w/ converting to a 'silvia'. its about having a nice motor.
i think the motor would be fine
just be ready for more then expected. do things right the frst time
imo it really comes down the the sller, do oyu trust them?
personally i wouldnt risk it but at least the guy is honest. that goes a long way.
