i just did a auto to 5 speed swap on my 90 240sx. i used a 1995 tranny with a 90 manual drive shaft, we started the car, with the back and the front jacked up. we put it in gear to see if the wheels turned and they did, but in a few seconds we noticed smoke. at the end of the drive shaft where it goes into the tranny, few of the bolt on the driveshaft are rubbing on the tranny tail, and the black plastic part was burning. my questions are
What should i double check?
is there something wrong with the driveshaft/tranny combo?
plz any input would be nice, this is the only thing keeping me from driving my car

btw It's a ka24E and i used a 95 Ka24de tranny with a ka24E manual shaft from a 1990 also. only a few of the bolts rub. maybe 2 or 3 of them, the one's with their head facing the tranny tail.

I was under the impression you couldn't use a DOCH tranny on a SOHC because they had differenet bellhousings.. that *may* have something to do with the length issue..
also, the manual shaft might be an ABS shaft.. and if you don't have ABS.. it's too long
The drive shaft is two sections.
1st section:
A/T:441mm
M/T:421mm
2nd Section:
With ABS:636mm
Without ABS:650mm
make sure these are what you have/want

i'm thinkn that it's the driveshaft that's different...

thanks for the reply, from this info if i had an ABS shaft it would be too short. my car does not have abs, and i think the car in the junk yard that i took the shaft from was a 1990 too without abs

define 'too short'.. there is supposed to be some freeplay in the shaft.. did you have to force it in to get the U-joint to bolt up?
some pictures would be helpful

ok its at a friends house now, i'll try and get some pictures up later.
to get it in the tranny was easy, getting it to bolt up to the diff was hard, esp getting the holes to line up, we had to force it on there

my guess is the bellhousing, and driveshaft. Gettin the shaft onto the diff is easy.

s14 tranny has an extra piece at the end of the tranny the s13 trany end is flat that is your problem.

all you have to do is knock off the big extra rubber shield on the end of your 95 tranny cause s13's did not have it. Its that simple . I ran a 95 tranny in my old black 91 back in the day. its not a problem

thanks guys
wanted to bring this topic back to life, cause i'm having the same problem. Except i have a SR redtop with the rubber cover on there. Has anyone received problems when taking the rubber cover off?

Maybe its rubbing on the dust boot colar (located on the snout of the tranny were the drive shaft meets the tranny and vise versa) which outer layer is rubber and inner it steel hence the smoke you saw, maybe it needs to be trimed down or get the correct part.

It is greatly appreciated that the individual that posted just before you used proper etiquette in the bumping of an old thread, but YOU, on the other hand, missed one small detail when reading:
thanks guys
... which means that HE got HIS answer. The question needed to answer at this point is this one:wanted to bring this topic back to life, cause i'm having the same problem. Except i have a SR redtop with the rubber cover on there. Has anyone received problems when taking the rubber cover off?
... to which you have offered nothing of value. For future reference, please pay attention to post dates AND content of posts in reference to WHO posted before responding.

Did you search and find anything more than this thread?

Dave (drift freaq) has dozens of 5-speed swaps in his resume, compared to that car in my signature (that is ONE if you were keeping score) and I bet a PM/IM would have saved this grief.
here is a pic of what i have, the lower one is from a automatic and the top is the one i bought from a "so called" manual

Since everyone is talking about driveshafts I was just wondering if a JDM S14 Manual Driveshaft is suppost to be the same as a US S14 Manual Driveshaft? Because I have a JDM Driveshaft, the lenght seems correct but the carrier bearing part where you have to bolt up two bolts dont line up it like a inch off. So I just ended up streaching the rubber carrier bearing all the way till it lined up, is this ok? Did anyone have this problem?
Thanks in advance.
