Some pics from testing today in NH. DSG will be servicing Weegee Smith's Group A Escort RS @ STPR so we went to shake the car down and see how it feels with its bollocks cut off (140bhp less with the 34mm restrictor). The car is still awesome and really needs all 7 gears and very aggressive anti-lag to get up and go with the reduced power. The ALS valve seemed to be sticking open due to a little corrosion after 3 years of no use but other than that it was very trouble free. The engine note has changed a little bit due to the addition of a cat from WRC04 Mitsubishi. We are all pretty psyched to see the car run again, especially Ramana who will be driving it for the second time.

That's just cool. I like how the fuses and relays are easily in reach if they need replacing.

that is one well executed car. may not be my favorite choice for platform...but the work put into it just impresses me to no end

So how'd it do?

At least you didn't have to wash it ;) :

Well...short version.
The turbo started loosing boost on the first stage. Second stage it was down to 1.8 bar. Third it was down to .6. Forth stage it was blown and 2psi with full anti-lag so Ramana stopped rather than completely destroy the $2200 shaft and turbine.

Long story...

At the start of the event we noticed the boost was only at 2.2 bar absolute. It should be 3.1. This was a brand new $7K Maram 247 turbo so we didn't expect anything to be wrong with it. We looked elsewhere. This is the first time the car had run in the US with the 34mm restrictor so a proper Group A mapped T10 pectel was installed and Grp A compressor housing with built in restrictor. The water injection stop valve (so when not pumping under boost the water doesn't drip into the intake manfold due to gravity) was frozen open which was causing a burble at idle and partial throttle. We fixed it and kept looking for a problem. No boost leaks. Gary "Gazzer" Baker (who worked for Ford in Borham, UK for the factory WRC RS200, Sierra and Escorts then S1600 Puma from 1986-2001) was over for the event on vacation and to help out so his input was important as ever. He was pretty much dumbfounded also as to a immediate solution so his reccomendation was to try the T10 with mapping for the 40mm restrictor. This helped out with power a little bit but it was still feeling weaker than a group N car with full ALS on. We started the event and it went downhill from there. Gary hand carried the turbo back to Mountune for analysis and the turbo was deemed to have a defective seal. There is still low boost after further tests so Weegee, who owns the car, has been sending maps back and fourth to his friend at pectel and hopefully we can get it sorted by maine (maybe pikes peak!) I'll post some photos from the event soon.

A 7k turbo. Man, I thought getting a ka-t was expensive. Pics of the turbo?

I'll post some pics of it later. It looks like a T3 except the compressor housing is modified for the restrictor. Its amazing a turbo of that size can produce 35psi and 440bhp on a 40mm restrictor. With the ALS on it is all available from 1800 rpm. The turbo used on every WRC besides the subaru now is the Garrett TR30R. It uses a Mar-M 247 Shaft and Wheel also but costs in excess of 10K new.

Best of luck with that! I am heading out soon to go to Pikes Peak, if I see your car there, I'll stop by and say "Hi"
