View Full Version : AWD is boring me to death

long story short, i had a 99 Civic Si that i was tired of and traded it in on an 02 wrx (currenty 6 months into payments on it). Now the reason i did this is because im in college in a higher elevation area that gets a good amount of snow in the winter and i need the extra room. Now i enjoy the power of the wrx but it is the most boring thing in my entire life. i havent spun a tire in 6 months and im going through withdraw. Oddly enough i feel so safe that i cant stand it.

What would you do in this situation? would you keep the wrx because its the "right" thing to do, or would you get what you really want (a 240sx, 300zx, 240z, something along those lines)

have any of you gone from rwd to awd and hated it/ loved it? gone from awd to rwd, hate it/ love it?

AWD gets old reallllllll fast.......but if you're living in higher elevation county, go take that bitch into the snow.... just make sure there are no hidden rocks there or you'll be hurtin hahahah

i wouldn't sell a car until I knew I had taken it to the limit of my driving ability in it or it was broken or i had enough cash that I just didn't care.

put some really crappy tires on it and drive in inclement weather.

Here's what you do:
You make the ultimate decision that you are just plain tired of the car, in the face of the convenience and safety it affords you given your situation. You go out, sell it, then you buy that 240SX/Z32/240Z, and continue to attempt to drive IT in your snowy higher elevation situation, you wrap it around a tree, a telephone pole, or simply off the side of the mountain... Another one bites the dust, the rest of us will be able to make even MORE insanely inflated cash on parts and shit.

if you're not sliding your AWD car, or if it feels too "safe", you're not driving hard enough. My friend goes insane in his wrx and has no problem having stupid fun in it.

I don't see anything wrong with your car. WRXs can be very fun to drive as well. You don't need to be spinning tires to have fun in a car. I used to have a 00 Civic Si and sold that to get out of the car payments. Every car has its fun and is different. I loved the way the Civic could hug corners and I can get the rear end loose with a big rear sway bar and use the throttle to pull it straight again on corner exits, the VTEC switchover at 6K and scream all the way to 8K. With the 240 it is exactly the opposite, it comes loose on throttle, not off but fun nonetheless - just in a different way and needs to be driven differently.

What you need to do is go modify that car so it is more fun to drive. Get a big rear sway bar and your rear end will come out real easy in cornering. When that happens I hope you know what you're doing...

you need an AWD that can take a hit. I wouldn't trade my AWD DSM for anything.

05-26-2005, 12:33 PM
I love my 240, but damn the car sux ass in bad weather(bad tires also). I haven't had it long enough to drive in the snow yet, but my ex-roomate killed his S14 on like a patch of ice 2 winters ago. Suck it up and drive the AWD for that cause once you get rid of it, you'll be missing it in bad weather. Besides...I dont know how many times I've seen wrx goes slideway at autoX.

I dont see how a wrx could be boring in snow though... Clutch drops, hand brake slides, just fucking rally manuvers like whoa. Not having to drive super super careful in shitty conditions, are you just looking for an excuse to get a car you think is hot?? Call me and I will trade you straight up for that thing.

I agree with a lot of these guys when they say keep the car dude. I just switched from a lightly modified S13 w/o LSD to a currently stock s14 with an LSD and the difference is uncanny. Your car got's a lot of potential man, you just got to tune that bitch's suspension so you could really get funky.

We're in the same boat, i'm stock too; for now.

LSDs people!! if you don't got one yet, you got some junk yard searchin to do... Espically you s13 drivers. Night & Day.

thanks for all of the opinions , ive been thinking for awhile about throwing some cash into suspension parts, so thats what i think ill do. i think it may seem like a good idea to me now to buy a rwd car, but i think in the long run (considering the weather conditions from october-january) it would be best to keep what i have, then either buy a 240 as a project car on the side, or after college. You cant really beat a turbo car with a warranty in college, thanks for the help guys.

problem with the WRX is the drivetrain is notorious for being weak. Plus the car can be lots of fun without wheelspin. But i'm not a big fan of AWD. IMO it has twice the traction of a normal car so it should have twice the power..say 400whp. Otherwise i'll stick to RWD.

dct223
05-26-2005, 05:22 PM
regular wrx's are not that fast bone stock... they are restricted up the ying yang... my friend is pushing out close to 300 hp to the wheels on stock turbo with ecu reflash and some bolt ons... after that he could do the power slides and what not on dry conditions... ive driven it after the reflash.. and i dont see how u think its boring...

not really. since the front wheels drive it changes the characteristics of powering through corners. since the front wheels work in cooperation with the rear you don't really need twice as much power because it channels it BETTER (in some cases). a 50/50 split is wasted power so you might have a point... idunno... i just know the only aWD car i'd have would be RWD biased like a skyline or porsche.

The normal WRX is mostly front wheel biased so it drives most like a front wheel drive car. They do it like that so normal people don't go spin and kill themselves if the rear end comes out. The STI is a different story.

Sold my s13 in October last year and bought a '02 a4 3.0 6spd quattro sport - now just bought another s13, and will consider selling the Audi for the same reason...no fun, at least not enough to jusitfy the $400/month payment plus premuim insurance. Got a little oversteer ONCE, I'd love to track it - but
the cheap-o s13 is more fitting/fun for now.

Also, only worthwhile modding option is suprcharger @ $5k :coolugh:

Now- were talking two very different cars here, audi is definately faster, but for my $, I save a ton and have more fun with RWD...but instantly lose the looks/status symbol of the lux car :faint: Not to mention grip/confidence is unbelivable in dry/rain/snow -all conditions really.. very different from the uneasiness I experinced in the 240sx a few times around a wet corner with a little throttle input and hill to throw the weight around.

My $.02 - note I still have Audi...still undecided on sale of it? = Money Pit

It sounds like you love German luxuries but still like fast cars and you want rwd. A s13 sounds like a terrible idea to me for you, why not e36 m3?.....It seems pretty obvious to me =)

I thought they were all front-wheel based, too...

Did Look - you're right on target- it's been my dream car since I was 16 (like just about everyone else)...But - that said - I've had 2 s13's (this will be 3), and I found another clean s13 for $2500 - clean e36 m3's start about 15k ("decent" miles and condition)...for now, the choice was easy, but I'm still considering the m3 (e36) if I wan't a payment and the E46 if I win the lotto :faint: .

I do and always have, however, also loved the look/layout of s13 hatch's. I won't be disappointed - just always in the "it needs this next" phase...that's modding cars though :)

1 point for the subies - Audi is a FWD platform, tend's to understeer when pushed - larger rear sway helps.

Audi is also a expensive VW, VW is crap. Old Audi, back in the true quattro days was a rwd based layout. F e46 as well, shit is piggy. I've seen cams, full exhaust, and a chip make 265-275whp on a e36m3, so thats the same power of a e46 but with a couple hundred pounds less and none of that dang fangled electronic new age gibirish. You can find them frequently for 10k but I would rather drop the 15k to get one in better condition and all as you said. Just get rid of the Audi, and dont focus on a s13. M3 is enough of an all around car to do it both!

are you guys talking about transverse engine mounting? Who cares which way the engine is positioned. On the race track, the Subaru's have a much harder time rotating cause the rear end is too "tight" . The EVO acts more like a RWD as you can pitch is sideways on a corner exit more easily. There are Subaru guys, then there are EVO guys. Then there are guys who hate both Mitsubishi and Subaru but still want to race, and they pick the EVO. These are the guys who's opinion matters.

I'm not sure what you mean by engines being mounted in a "RWD fashion" in a subaru. those are boxer engines, horizontally opposed, not inline or in a V configuration like most cars

EVOs remain popular in japan because of the ADC and AYC controllers, which are not in the US version of the car. Those assists devices are the only reason why you'd want to buy the EVO over an Impreza. The Impreza has some understeering issues out of the factory, but you can easily upgrade the suspension.

As for the WRC cars, didn't Mitsubishi rank dead last this year? Lowest scoring team, lowest scoring car-- beaten by Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, Subaru, and Hyundai.

Correction the US version of the STI does have something similar to ADC and AYC its called DCCD which alows you to change the bias on the car all the way to 65/35 to 50/50.

US STI is tail happy...
