Is there any way to tell if the MAF is working or not? Because the mech said he checked everything else for my smog problem and he thinks its the MAF. I searched on how to clean it, some people say using contact cleaner or carb cleaner. Can someone post a pic on what to clean to make sure i dont break anything? It already has a seperate ground to the chassis. And could a dirty maf cause a high nox reading? thanks..

Sounds like you need a new mechanic!! A bad MAF will automatically trigger you Check Engine Light immediately. If you can drive your car & the tachometer revs over 2K RPM then your MAF is still good.
Hi NOX readings are due to 1). Clogged catalytic converter, 2). Clogged exhaust tube - it's the tube that runs from the exhaust manifold back to the EGR valve, OR 3). Melted rubber vacuum hose that runs between the EGR valve & the BPT valve. The rubber vacuum hose has a tendency to dry out & crack due to the high underhood temperatures.
NOX is created by odorless gases that help form smog, and give smog its characteristic brown color. NO is produced when temperatures in the combustion chambers exceed 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. Excessive engine temperatures could be caused by a lean fuel mixture, by retarded timing, by carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber, by a malfunctioning engine cooling system or by a clogged catalytic converter. The function of the EGR System is to reduce NO - it does it by pumping hot exhaust gasses back into the combustion chamber helping to reduce the combustion chamber temperatures lower than 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. Unhealthy levels of NO emissions result in a vehicle failing its Smog Check.
Don't ask me how I know all this.....
