can you run a turbo on a s13 with stock internals without blowing the engine. if not what mods would have to be done to the engine.

nope you can't. if you add a turbo to that truck motor it will blow.

joking. you can use an upgraded fuel pump and a FMU i think it's called. a set of injectors would be even safer.

You don't even really have to do that much, but it does depend on how much boost you plan on running. Also, would you plan on piecing together your own kit, or would you run a kit like NSPORT makes?

I knew that Fmax didn't make em for the S13 (actually I was still in the frame of mind of DSM cars, from helping my friend)...I was uhh...just testing you guys!

fmax doesn't make a kit for the s13, but http://nsport.com does!

it's been pretty much accepted that you can run 6-7 psi on stock internals and not worry. Although most people with turbo'd KA's seem to get pistons/rods, balancing, as an added precaution. at least get your engine balanced. also, since most s13's have some old engines in them....rods/pistons are not a bad idea.

but anyways, yes you can run on stock internals.

Yeah check out the nsport.com. They got it pretty much well explained...

Please tell me if I am missing something but why not start with the sr for the same price as a turbo kit and not worry about internals and the likes Then you can improve on a platform that is all ready made for a turbo. It just seems the sr would be more durable.

No offense to you turbo ka guys

Well, becuase a turbo KA has torque. And doesn't NEED to be rebuilt untill what, 12psi on a s14 engine? Thats REALLY close to the sr20 limits stock. But you have the whole "Turbo cant push anymore, so I have to spend the $2000 for a bigger turbo." and Ka people have the whole "I have a huge turbo, and can't run it to max pressure without spending $2000 on an engine rebuild."
Its all the same man. Just a preference of torque vs rpm.

Plus don't forget that SR is kinda... illegal. And exactly what jeff said. When you guys run out of boost on the turbo that comes stock with the sr, u gonna crave a bigger one that costs some extra $$$

Not many people plan on running more than 20psi.... for those people the SR is probably a good buy.... although to run close to that limit, or even to run at 14psi you'll need injectors, ecu, boost controller, FMIC, and a larger turbo. In essence, the KA already comes with all of that.... so you can max your engine out from the start.... and from there you can always build up the engine.
Another thing.... boost for boost... the KA will spool quicker and get more power......

In the end, some people just wanna be JDM... other people want power.

Don't start, people that want power should go for the RB..

SR and KA are equally capable imo.

Wanna start arguing? go a couple pages back and argue in the KA vs. SR thread.

i believe that if the USDM came with an SR20, then mod it to be quick, but it didnt,
no offense to the sr people but i believe that people think there car is a silvia or jdm so they drop an sr in. the 240sx is 2.4L not a 2.0L . I hate to be hipocritical but i can see dropping an sr20 if there motor blew up or has too many motor problems, but those people who has 40kmiles on there car and feel that they can benefit from spending 3k-4k on a swap, for more power they can get a turbo kit for the KA.
that is my opinion.

but then there's people on the other side of the coin, well, most the s13 ppl for that matter...
I have 138k on my engine, KA-T would be engine seppuku for me, so I'm opting for the SR.

114k miles and still has more power than when it was new. It's all about how well you take care of it (this engine will be turbo'ed)

You were right the first time its "seppuku".

Anyway, throw a huge turbo on the engine and run it at full boost until the engine blows......just kidding you can add a turbo to any engine just as long as you know the limits and don't push the engine too far. I wonder what happens if you threw on one of those vacuum cleaners that look like a turbo on your intake and turn it on.....?

Personally, I would feel like a fool to replace my S13 motor (which has 35,000mi) and buy a used SR . I'm going to turbo the sucker, let it live its days as a KA24DET, and when it finally dies, I will decide if having an SR swap is worth it. Why waste a decent KA, buy an SR, and then buy a larger turbo? If you want that type of power, buy a GT-R

How much boost do you plan to run man? you gonna do any internals? I know how you plan to build the kit and set it up, but not sure of the first two questions?

I've got about 92k on mine. She's strong and has great, leak down and compression numbers, but I'm still skeptical about running a turbo on it at this point. I personally would rather have a KA over an SR. Because once I spend $3000 on my KA, I'll have b/w 240-260 HP. I spend 3000 for the SR (and do work myself) I've got 205hp. I add 1,000 for internals, and I've got 350 on the KA. I spend 1,000 more on the SR and Ive got about 275.. pooey. I'm still contemplating buying a used KA, and building it up.

Also you don't really need to do all that stuff to the internals to a KA. For higher HP all you really need is Pistons. They are the only part thats not Forged from the factory. Also.. You can run the same boost on stock internals of the S13, and S14. the only difference is the Oil Squirtes on the pistons.

correct me if im wrong but if ur worried about blowing ur engine u could raise ur valves up a bit with a bigger gasket reducing the unboosted compression so u can run a turbo and still be safe.

Or just get new pistons...

The KA's are much stronger than you people realize. First to answer the question you can easily handle 10psi, with a computer upgrade, injector upgrande and a new fuel pump. and all that can be had for about 1000 dollars. will it blow up? wel that also depends on the install and your driving, I run 9psi on the street and 10psi at the track and I still have a beutiful engine and all the parts are still inside it. Nsport is also not the end all to turbo kits, nor should you think that. The Nspot Kit it for someone who knows little about the car and doesn't want to change much (battery position/cut holes) all you really need to do is figure out what you want get your core components (manifold turbo wastegate intercooler and blow-off) the rest is piping which you can have custom made for about 400, and exhaust which you can have made for about 300. so make your own kit and be one of the few people who run a turbo s-13

are you thr RobtheChef running the FMax Stage II with like 110k + miles on the original KA???

Sykikchimp: not planning on doing any internals, planning to run 5-7 psi with an RRFPR untill I can get the JWT ECU, injectors, Cobra MAF setup... then I'll work on boosting to the limits of the KA :-P

eh, sykik, the S13KADE's have piston oil squirters. The only KA's that did not were the KAe's.

Now on to more important things. Hey Rob , welcome aboard , now we have even more viable KA+T proponents to kick the SR Nazi's butts hahahhaha J/K.
Yes guys I have 27K on my 91 S13 yes I am going custom KA+T . If my engine had high mileage I might think about a SR ,but at the same time with all these guys dumping their low mileage KA's and putting in SR's, there are an abundance of low mileage KA's availible for cheap . hell I just got my friend Trung on the socal list a 98 KA engine with 42K on it for $400
KA+T we are going to rock the world. hahahha
