ok I just got back from the bodyshop, my car was supposed to be black with mild metallic and a violet pearl...instead it's purple with a heavy metallic...there's not much I can do about it, I bought all the supplies, a guy painted it for me, but there's no warranty or garauntee so it's on me to fix it if I want it fixed...is there any kind of pearl or clearcoat that will darken the color? like a transparent black (like the stuff used to smoke taillights..but for the whole car)?
any help would be greatly appreciated as I felt completely nautious as I looked at the car in it's current state...I want the metallic dimmed (the car has so much it almost looks silver) and the purple turned more towards a midnight or black...
thanks

Haha, sorry to hear that. Usually you ask them to spray it on a small plastic car/curved surface as a test sample so you know what you will be getting. Post pics up if you can.

man, this is called a learning experience. you should have had a test panel sprayed, simple as that. i'd live with a decent paint job and just get it repainted when i got around to it than screwing with it right now. you need to let the paint cure and everything anyhow.\
i say see if the paint job grows on you then in a few months redo it if it still bugs you. your money is spent either way

yeah it really comes down to the fact that I'm a complete idiot...
well, I went back and looked at it today...it's not as absolutely hideous as I thought yesterday...but yeah, it's going to take a lot, a lot of getting use to...I talked to the guy to find out how much paint I had left, and it looks like I would basically have to buy the paint and the clear all over again...I'm really not sure I want to spend that much money on this car (as the first time around was more of a "well it's cheaper than going to a bodyshop, so why not")...so I'm going to put it back together and see if it grows on me, if not, I'll probably just put it up for sale.

dude my first paint job got screwed up so i just considered it a REALLY good sealer coat and had it redone.
paint that hoe white or yellow and call it a day. something simple to just get you by.
for real though... i take back my previous statement.... you cna't drive it like that... yich.
edit: do NOT listen to the guy that says you can repaint in 12 hours cause he's full of it. you need to wait at least a week before you start jacking with it. two weeks is best. this way all the molecules in the paint will be settled into their new home so you can sand it off super smooth like.
if you repaint it within 12 hours you'll regret it.

It's not a bad color, but on my computer I can notice the door seams and whatnot. I don't know if it's just the reflection or whatever but to me it makes the paint job shitty, not the choice of color.

the big issue that I'm running into now is the obvious fact that whether or not I wanted it this color combination, the metallic is certainly not sprayed evenly (door james and body line breaks are much heavier) and so I'm looking into other paints and will talk to him about redoing the entire car.
it looks like I'll be buying some HOK black sparkle pearl and some new clear and give it another try.
are you sure they didnt use driveway gravel instead of pearl/metallic flake?

05-23-2005, 05:48 PM
Haha,... I hate the color man, sorry. You gotta be one hardcore drift monkey to get away with that color. Good luck though.
Is it me, or is the clearcoat super thin and uneven? That finish is gonna fade and dull real quick..
95civicEX
05-23-2005, 05:57 PM
yeah, I thought about starting a jem and the rockers drift team, but that dream was short lived as I just don't think I have the ego for it...I'm on the hunt for stock black paint, no more of this custom nonsense as I guess I just don't have the budget to have it done right and custom at the same time...
as for the clearcoat, the problem isn't that it's too thin, there are 3 coats on there, but the first coat which included the metallic was sprayed completely undevenly.
Thorpedo
05-24-2005, 08:29 AM
You could just have the guy sand it down (not breaking through to any of the color though) and spray two or three coats of way over reduced black(400-500%) then reclear. It'd be the cheapest fix and it would darken it immensely. but you run in to the problem of having a lot of material on every panel(thickness wise) so it would a bit more brittle(easier for rock chips). If you told the guy you want a mild-metallic look, why in the hell did he put it in the clearcoat. If he would of put half the amount of the metalliic/pearl he used into the base, it wouldnt look nearly as bad.
I cant tell on my screen since its dark as hell, but is there just too much purple pearl in it so it makes the black appear purple or is it just straight up purple in color?

okay, i say use the fact that thepainter didn't paint it very well as leverage to get you a discount on a few coats of white or some other simple basecoat with some clear.
whoever sprayed it screwed up around all the edges and you should get a discount especially since he wasted the paint you already bought. (eventhough it is hideous).
think like a business man and get a killer discount at least.

Nice bass boat sparkle man. I dunno if I'd touch that thing with a 10 foot pole. Maybe if it was solid purple, but with the little glitter sparkles in there....ooo man, sucks to be you.
So you picked the paint out yourself? Just get it repainted for a few hundred. Mistakes happen, oops.

^ this is why you read the last post in the thread before replying.
That purple paint looks pretty horribly done. The finish looked matte in the pictures and the pearl was unevenly applied.
Good to see that you're giving it another go. I'd definitely go with a better painter this time around.
If you want a black color with some purple pearl thrown in try the 2000 Civic Si Flamingo Black Pearl. It's black but if you look at it closely there's purple metallic pearl in it. Mixing custom colors are a hit or miss... mostly miss.

yeah the car is definitely getting a test panel this time around :D
as for blocking the car, this is my second time around doing so, the first time only about 2/3 of the car ended up in primer, but there's not a whole ton of difference between 2/3 and the whole thing...and that's what friends and family are for :)

there're definitely waves, I don't think it's possible to get anything perfectly smooth with a da, so yeah, the plan has always been to block the primer...isn't that what you always do?

Damn nice, how much did that cost? in materials, labor?

I got it all back together today, almost at least...the antennae decided that when it powered up it would just keep going and popped right out, then it wouldn't retract at all and the motor just kept running...so I ordered a new one, should look pretty good once it comes in - http://locustom.com/shark2_kit.htm about a third the price of stock and a whole lot better looking :D
but yes, on to bigger and better things here are a couple of pictures from the apartment. I washed the car but as you can see just driving down the highway for 5 minutes brought out all sorts of dirt and water out of the cracks so it'll need to be washed again...the interior was also cleaned but it really needs a thorough detailing to get decent again:

^I left this from the original paint job just so I would never forget how it looked, if I ever get sick of it, I'll just grab another from a junkyard for $20 and switch it out.
Damn nice, how much did that cost? in materials, labor?
the materials for everything (which includes tape, masking paper etc) is probably right around the $350-400 range, but remember this is the second time around :)
I got the paint from a different guy this time, if you're really interested pm me and I'll give you his info (he owns the company that makes the paint but doesn't really market it himself), I didn't bite the local shop bullet and paid half the price for better product. The labor was all done by myself except for the actual painting which cost 170 the first time and 75 the second time around (military perk and the guy that painted it and I are now friends so he cut me a deal).

yeah there's absolutely no need for a fender roll right now...I'm wanting to get different wheels and tires, but either way I don't ever want my car so low that it requires rolling, I enjoy driving my car rather down the road, I don't want to have to worry about every little stone or dip.
