View Full Version : Rare SR20? or wishfull thinking?

Ok, ive had my 97 RHD S14 Silvia for a while now, it apears us Africans got Britian imports as they have the foglighted rear bumpers ectr.

Its engine (sr20 as they all are here) was in bad shape when i got it, soon diagnosed with a Head gasget leak, imidiatly when pulling the valve cover i thought modded jap import as it has no VVT and aftermarket cams, pulled the head to find it cnc ported and ceramic coated, and the intake manifold apears to be extrude honed and ceramic coated to, was fitted with a metal head gasget but the previous owner said he did that cause he thought it was shot when mean while he had a bad BOV (retarded south african)

So all along ive thought he must have got a nicly modded jap import motor cause no where here in South Africa do you get Ceramic coatings for ports, CNC head work or extrude honing, and i know the previous owner couldnt have afforded to send them international for that work.. so I was happy,

Till last night,,,
After asking a good buddie of mine who is a SR boff about my stock oil cooling devise he left me extreemly confuzed. I told him I have a stainless looking round oil cooler mounted right above the oil filter tucked up neer the block that shares 2 coolant lines from the heater plumbing. He sounded a little confuzed then said only limited SR's came with stock oil coolers but wasnt sure which.

So was he confuzed and it is a common thing? or has somone put a rare SR20 into my S14 before i baught it? I remember reading about the S14 270R and a rare S15 Sr20 that was in limited production for a little while but does anyone know exactly what was changed on them besides turbo? and if any of them came with anything similar to what ive written?

Any insite would be great,

Also to note our engine numbers are totaly different in SA compared to jap, EU and US notations so that was of no help while trying to work it out...

Please somone let me know...

well.......if its any help i also have a 97 RHD silvia.....i havent pulled the head or mani for that fact, so i cant confirm or disprove porting in mine. but i can check for odd oil cooler you speak off. this will show weather it is rare/aftermarket or not. i'll get back to you about it later this week. pm me if i have forgotten though.

where did you get an s14 from? i never knew they sold silvias in south africa... only the 200sx with the ca18det motor.... and that was a hatchback, not an s14. or maybe this is in chicago?

im actually kinda excited because i wouldnt mind driving around in an s14 when i go back to the cape area.

Lots of the S13 hatch's CA's

There were about 300-400 S14's sold from 95-97 (most written off or stollen by now) all Zenki's all SR20 VVT's, all with rear electronic diff coolers, but they are odd ball's, Zero emmissions IE no egr, no o2 sensors at all, no cat nothing. Its got a different ECU No: than all other models. Now this isnt just one or two, ive gone threw probably 6 or 7 ive seen, chaced down and spoken to, one had 3000 origional KM's and identical to mine, zero emmisions. Theres a pretty nice blue S14 with over 350KW running around CPT got shit yellow graffix and HKS badges on it.

If you think thats nice, there are 5-6 S15's 3 in GP 1 in CP and one in Bloem, all fairly stock though. We recently got about 10 R34 spev V's in aswell, one of them has a HKS 2.8 stroker kit, pretty quik..

Im not to far from CPT, I live in Knysna, grew up neer Komatjie :doh:

Theres a bunch of 4-5 guys in GP that get together but myself and a few M3 owners and the HKS blue S14 are doing legalised street racing, we work with the municipality to block off whole sections of roads and do jymkana, road course, 400m drag, 800m.. there was an event in Plett where we did from the bottom circle up to the top circle (about 2kms of prime 4 lane wide twisties) lol one guy in a Porsche 911T lost it pretty bad and totaled it but we saw Massaraties, Ferrarri's, 2 Lotus Elise's, R33GTR, old lambo all screeming up.

But allas as usual the S's dont get much attention, robbie at Ferrolis in his twin engine twin turbo Mk1 golf steels the crowd in CPT, and Louis Lima has just finnished a Mazda russler with well over 800kw from its seriously blown 4 banger, air shifted RWD and all carbon body in GP..

But back to my problem, I need to know where the hell my engine is from, now im pinning hopes on 270R S14 or the hotted up S15 i can never remember the name on, but no one seems to know EXACT mods done the the 270R's

yea, mine is jap and its a kouki. it DOES have emissions fwiw. again, i'll let you know for sure about the oil cooler when i get a chance to look at it.

Well if any of you were wondering, neer all AU and NZ S14 and 15's have stock oil coolers, and ontop of that S13 and early S14's did not have BB turbo's :(

well from what you told me its a reg. sr20 except for the fact that its been ported and polished..
your motor was probably modded, but its not going to be a 270R motor for shure( unless it looks like the pic I attached, and it had the following, cams 62 instead of the stock 60 " intake and exhaust cams", 444 injectors instead of the 380 stock, this doesnt really help but it idles at 1000 rpm instead of 800 this is more bc of the 270R ecu )

Well ive come to find that AU and NZ S14 sr20det's all have oil coolers stock,,,

Still a mistary who CNC ported it though, but ohh well, turns out i have a cracked sleeve
