Hey, anyone know how to hook up an aftermarket tach on an sr20det. I had it hooked up on my sohc and it was easy, but i dont exactly know what to wire into on this one because of the ignition. I feel like an idiot, i can install the whole engine and wire up everything so it starts the first time, but cant hook up the damn tach!
thanks,
Jeremiah Jordan

check http://www.msdignition.com
they have what are called Tach Adaptors #8912. these might be what you need....??
otherwise, call Auto Meter technical and ask em (815) 895-8141 Central Time (IL). they may suggest you send in your tach so they can mod it since you have multiple coils.

Well, i tried hooking it up to the ignition signal off the ecu and it just blipped down to zero then wobbled back and forth. Guess thats not it. Also tried the tachometer signal off the ecu. Not that either. Any body have another idea?

Its the stock sr20det 4 coil ignition. I looked on twinturbo.net because they also run coil packs on there cars and they simply hooked theirs into the tach signal from the ecu. What the hell is the diffence between the coilpacks on a vg30dett and an sr20det that would make the sr's signal not read? Beats me. I've seen these same tachs on peoples cars and someone has to know how to hook it up properly.

Do you have the stock sr20 ecu. If you do I'll see if I can find out from a friend of mine that hooked up an autometer tach on his... All I know is that he hooked it up to the tach signal on the ecu. I'll find out what wire it was...

remember when u cut the little wire on the back of the tach to install it in ur SOHC car (for 4cyl). that tells the tach to "read" a standard 4cyl pulse with a single coil.....ur runnin multiple coils, so the tach isn't recv'g the correct signal. u may have the correct signal wire @ the SR20 ECU, but it sends a different signal. if this is the case (i'm pretty sure it is), u need to call Auto Meter, and send it to them so they can convert it to multiple coil signal reception. hope that helps

Yikes! this is horrible....
this is the email autometer sent me->
Sir,
Yes, we do get a few questions, but cannot assist you. With the Japanese spec engines we
have no information on what to connect them to or what kind of signal(s) are present. You
would have to try and obtain a service manual for the vehicle for more assistance.

This kinda relates to this topic somewhat....but does anyone know where the ignition coil is on a 95 240SX? I hope this question isn't too stupid but I really can't find it. Thanks.

i dont know where it is, but i dont imagine it would be too hard to find. just look at the dist. cap, then follow the wire to the coil.
