Being as i am a cheapass, i dropped the idea of saving up for a Nismo GT Pro LSD, and went with a cheap, weld diff. I was kinda of sceptical about putting it in, thinking along with buddies what his dad "might have" done wrong. We thought it'd be smarter to weld a bar inside the pinion housing, locking it up really stiff. Then it came to mind if he did that, we wouldn't have gotten the output shafts in, and just fuck the whole thing up. Welds were placed directly on the pinions, in each pinion contact point, locking it. Driving it is pretty bad ass. Takes a little while to get comfy with, but other than that, its great. You know when it'll hug, and when it'll slip. Going from Open Diff to 2way is night and day. You've really got to try a locked diff. And when you do peelouts, it won't look like half your car just disappeared. :p

you aren't open diff to 2-way. you went to straight open to spool. Just don't dry everywhere with it. I guess it hurts longevity or something?? Have other people with welded diffs chime in on this.

drive it around for a week and let us know if it breaks. :)

been rockin the welded diff daily for almost a year now. runs fine. no complaints....except that i've gone through quite a few tires....

i had one for awhile too and had no problems. good option if you're broke.

Had mine for about a month now, its cool, no big deal as long as you dont drive like an ass.

im just concerned on tire wear.. shouldnt be bad if u drive normal right?

id like some info on this too, im too poor at the moment to buy some good lsd, so i figured a good welded rear end might work fine, im not worried about breaking anything, i have a spare rear end lying around ( :keke: ). I'm mainly worried about the welds breaking and the rear end locking up and killing me and any innocent bistandards

I had a certified welder weld one of my open diffs only to have it break after a week. I could have died if it locked up. One of the gears actually broke off and was floating around in there chewing everything up. The Only welded diff I would trust is Luke's Weld Locd Version 3, check out his article here (http://guernsey.globat.com/~mountainracer.com/shockdrifting/weldlocd.html)

Its pretty badass. Tirewear is increased, but then again, you are bound to rip tires apart drifting anyways. I took it out on a nightrun, and it makes a big difference. Taking S-turns requires more finesse, and throttleplay, while with an open diff, you could just let off on the gas to pitch it back. Im sure my tires will be gone within the week, but it doesnt matter. I get Falken Azenis' for 40 new.

For the people without awesome hookups, does it affect normal driving much.

me> student, staggerd set up ( non-rotateable), daily drive.

It doesn't really wip out if you don't want it to... if that's what you're asking... and i daily drive my shit every single day...

this diff is the shit... it feels hella solid compared to the cheap ass $30 weld diff my friend made.

just waiting for the ncda night drift.

Daily driven isn't such a big wear and tear of tires. Minor squealing from tires every now and then from sharp turns, but other than that, its all gravy. And for all you cool guys that do donuts, you can keep it tight like Korean if you wanted to.

last senctence... what do you mean?

Var
05-11-2005, 07:56 PM
It means...When you have a welded diff, you can to tighter donuts, ie: in smaller circles. Tight like Korean is a play on words. It means Koreans are tight.

It can be interpreted in 2 ways

1- Koreans are tight as in cool, or "down" if you will

2-Korean women have tight vaginas.

haha, thanks for the break down. i figured example 2, i just couldnt relate it to the dounuts. (i had a korean gf) good times.

yup, and she was really good shit. Thanks for the Korean Buffet! but you'll notice a HUGE difference. You should pick one up just cuz its a good stepping stone for real LSD.

another really cool thing about it is that you can evenly spray ricers behind you with an even coat of dirt, rubble, urine, etc etc etc. Your mind is the limit. Its also fun doing that to make really big dustclouds.

Is a welded diff ok to drive in the foot hills were its more high speed the turns arent very tight?

Is a welded diff ok to drive in the foot hills were its more high speed the turns arent very tight?

yes.

please refer to it as a spool, becaues thats what it is. (well thats what its equiv to anyway).

basically for grip driving spools are generally a bad idea. they require you to power over one tire in order to turn effectively. really have to work the car to get it to turn.
however for drift where you want both tires spinning in the back anyway, spool is a good idea. because you're power overing BOTH tires.

if you want to a get a general feel for the effects of different diffs go play f1challenge with prototypec mod. or play some gt4.
prototype c simulates 80's porsches that have spool in the rear.
and in gt4 you can mess with decel lsd setting to understand how an open diff allows you to turn in super hard, while i a locked (are tighter) diff will make the car turn in less.
this is because on turn in the outside tire needs to be spinning quicker than the inside one. open diff allows this to the maximum, whereas locked diff opposes this to maximum.
this also applies to mid corner.

for corner exit, if you're late apexing then locked diff could help you lay down power sooner. this is the theory when running a spool for grip driving. drive very deep into corner, slow way down, use power over to turn car, use excellent power lay down to accelerate earlier and in straighter line from the corner.
basically the ol drive hard, slow and pitch it, accelerate straight out.
which sounds similar to drifiting!

so yeah spool sure isnt lsd. but if you cant afford lsd and you're into drifting, its a pretty damn cheap way to go!
for grip, esp on hills and stuff spool is basically a poor choice.
