Hi,
Here is my dilemma.
I have a 92 RMS13 with a blown head. It appears the issue was the water pump, so that will get replaced. I pulled the engine and ordered an upper and lower timing chain, tension side, tension slack side (with 2 tension side bolts). The next step was to take the head over to a shop to see if it was warped. I'm not sure what the total cost will be, but the timing gear was $100. So now I need to budget for a gasket, water pump, and sealant. I was also thinking of replacing the front and rear main seals. The car is in decent shape with no frame damage.
By chance, I just received a S14 with no drivetrain (engine, driveshaft, diff, etc...) It was in a front-end collision and the radiator core support is gone and the frame looks a little bent. The dash and cluster are gone, but it has most of the interior panels. The brakes and axels seem decent and all the body panels from the end of the fenders back are good. The power windows and locks were removed, but the wiring is still present.
My original plan was to convert the S13 to a S14 5 lug w/ updated interior and go KA-T, but now I'm not so sure. I can only keep the S14 in storage for a few more weeks, then it has to go. The S13 is in my garage. I only have about $1000 to spend right now, but I could save up an additional $2000 within 2 months. I do have a spare KA24DE, but needs about $200 in repairs to get it running. I was also thinking about a SR20DET, but I would need to wait and save even more money.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

sound advice.
The only interior part you'd really want is the S14 driver's/passenger's seats.

It's probably because you've never been hit on head after you close the door, it's also very likely that your noggin isn't as huge as mine :duh:

aren't seatbelts less effective after a front end collision? anyhow, dont forget the carpet too. it has to be newer than your S13's.

From the replies so far, it looks like I'll be stripping the S14, which is fine.
Will I need the S14 control arms to add the S14 5 lug conversion to the S13?
As far as the S14, do I want any of the other suspension parts for the S13 or am I just wasting my time?
Thanks!

If you want more -camber you might want to keep the front LCA's, it's not necessary to save them for the 5lug swap, you only need the ball joints from them.

The seat belts can also still be used if the the internal mech. hasn't be tampered with. I would also not keep the carpet because it won't fit to well.

I'll start checking prices on Ebay to see what is worth my time. Maybe I can use money for some 300z calipers and a new water pump for the S13...

How could you not be annoyed. I've hit my head on that thing several times. I first had it in my 91 4dr civic and I still hit my head :ghey: I would hate it when you're sticking your head through the door with window down of course, and you open the door or close it and...Whack! that thing hits you in the head or ear, etc.. :whip: :rl:

You can probably sell the doors, mirrors, and the trunk lid off of the s14. Beyond that i'd junk it. Or you could forget about stripping it and sell it as a rolling chasis in need of some TLC and some frame straightening.

The previous owner probably glued the badge on the back, so I'm sure it was not a SE.
Does anyone think there are over $300 in parts to be had from the car?
Thanks.

hahahhaha, preferences, preferences. S13 Fastbacks look like the true sportscar they are supposed to be . S14 is a sports coupe as is the S13 coupe. completely different type of fan base IMHO.
As fars as S14's looking a lot more serious that is opinion. There is no difference in how serious the cars look. Excuse my car resents that you thinks its not serious, hahhahahhahahhaha. give me a break.
The only thing looks wise that signifies anything on the cars is the s14 zenki looking happy face and the S14 Kouki looking angry faced.
That and the pignose S13 just being a ugly front end IMHO and you know what some people do not think its ugly.
Like I said preferences and opinions thats all.

Not to mention, the S14 was designed to be cuter, and more geared towards women, cuz that was their most lacking demographic in 94.
How does something look "serious"? I've always thought "mean" looking is about as close to "serious" as you can be for a car... in which case, cutsey cars like the Neon, with it's "HI!" marketting strategy when it was first released is why no one can take it "seriously", even when it's dressed up in it's badass SRT4 self. Now like Dave said, the S13 was designed to be a sports car. The S14 was going more for the luxary coupe with a sporty background, slightly less performance, slightly more creature comforts.
so yah, saying a S14 is more "serious" than a S13 (stock for stock), is perfectly backwards :D Now before you S14 (95-96) ppl get all riled up (and if you knew your car's history, you would NOT be riled, you know it's true), do some googling. Nissan themselves made those choices and included them in their marketting. Many many car mag that reviewd the car back in 95 concurred and reiterated the point. It's not saying the S13 is "better" than the S14 in any way. Nissan was trying to sell to a broader demographic, a move that while passable in JDMland, ultimately caused the death of the american 240sx. That's factual history, not conjecture.
Look at the articles
Look at the press releases from nissan
Look at the production numbers
Now, does any of this mean that a S14 can't be better than any S13? Of course not. ALL S-chassis cars are highly moddable, and incredibly capable. It just seems that there are a lot of ignorant people (and that's not bad as long as you don't intend to stay ignorant), and people in denial about why their car was design/produced/marketted the way it was.
It all comes down to what it always does in big business, $$$ :)
That being said, S14MCs are HOTT. :D

ok. im sorry i hate the way usdm s13 coupe looks stock. or the hatch stock. s14 stock owns all of the above. and s14 is more cash. so its a statement. sorry just moded s14 looks better IMO than modded s13. we are just talking looks here. zenki or kouki. plus whats that about s13 being a "true sports car". neither are. there were BUDGET sport compacts. not ferraris or vettes. get fucking real people. but yea, im just talking preferences.
and the question was answered. fix that s14 and keep it. or be "original" and buy s13.

All preferences aside, you're confusing Sports Car with GT/Super Car/Exotic.
what's a Miata? a SPORTS car.
what's a Gallardo? a SUPER Car.
HUGE difference.
when I was about 14, I called my uncle's 911T a Sports Car. He took it as a belittling comment and chastised me for it. I'm sure if you talked to a Z06 owner, and said he had a cool sports car, he'd have a real similar reaction.
S13 = Sports Car. I think you are the only one who's trying to lump them all together, because they're night and day to me.

I always thought our cars were categorized as "sports coupes" and that was one step below a "sports car" ?
sports coupe = miata, 240, eclipse, civic Si, etc
sports car = s2000, 350z, etc
super car = ferrari, lambo, etc
i could be wrong tho...

Update:
I pulled the entire S14 interior out this weekend. The only thing left is the headliner and ABS control module, which requires a security Torx bit. Next week will be the removal of remaining engine bay parts and then I'm taking out all the glass, tail lights, ball joints, and maybe the power steering lines. I'm not sure about the control arms, but I guess they could be usable.
With the exception of the ABS module, I was impressed that Nissan only used a few types of bolts and screws for the interior. It took me about 2 hours to remove all the parts (with a few breaks). This interior really looks much better than the S13. If I'm feeling ambitious, I'll revisit the conversion at a later date or look into dyeing the S13 interior.
When I'm done, I'll put up a FS posting for extra parts.
