My car ('98) has been having this problem for the longest time that causes the car to run really rich and blow black smoke out the back. The car would stall if i didnt keep on the gas. Anyway on my second visit to the shop, the mechanic said i most likely had a bad ecu. He said they had trouble keeping in communication with the computer. The real kick in the balls is that he said it would be about a grand to get a new computer from nissan. When I suggested sourcing a second hand ecu, he said he wasnt comfortable with using a used computer. Well im not comfortable with paying a thousand dollars for a computer. So i guess im wondering what the problems of swaping out a used ecu would be if any. Can i use any manual obd II ecu? Does this ecu need to be reset before installation? Thanks for the help.

Thats what i said to the mechanic, he made it seem it was going to be a pain to use a used ecu. I dont see a problem with it and i just want the opinion of everybody else. There are enough obd II cars being parted out i could find a computer for cheap.
