Formula SAE is a global collegiate design competition- the largest of it’s
kind-with the challenge being to create and sell an open wheel formula style
racecar. Over 300 schools participate worldwide, and the University of Arizona,
my school, is one of them. In addition to every aspect of engineering and
design, every aspect of running and managing a true race team is a vital part
of this competition. This includes the necessary ability to sell our racecar to
investors, who would then allow for it’s mass production. That means that some
idea of the market, and it’s needs is required. With this in mind, I ask that
you fill out my survey. It will help our team understand what market we are
selling this car to, and is a vital part of the sales component of our efforts.
I assure you that this data will only be used for the purposes of this survey,
and your name, email address, or personal information will not be divulged to
anyone. You will only be represented as a part of a group, never as an
individual. The survey is enclosed; thank you very much for your time.

You can return the survey to me by simply emailing me your answers at [email protected]

If you'd like to learn more about our team and it's efforts, feel free to visit our site. (http://formula.engr.arizona.edu/)

Part 1: Defining the market.

How old are you?

What is your gender?

What, approximately, is your annual income?

About how much do you spend each year on autocross, DE?s, or other various
motorsports events (not including ones you attend as a spectator)?

Is the car you use to compete your daily driver or a car built exclusively for
track or autocross duty?

Part 2: Defining the customer’s needs.

Rate the following in order of importance to you.

Safety
Reliability
Performance
Interchangeability and upgrade-ability
Cost

The cost has a large range. According to the rules, it should be less than $25,000 with material/parts cost and labour assuming you have the infrastructure. Wise spending you can go build for $8K-$10K. Don't think you'll be very competitive. Top teams have big budgets. I am alumni of CSUN FSAE and my year I raised $50k to buy material, parts, tools, travel, office equip...

Greatest project any engineer can do, so support your future engineer's :). Got me my dream job.
