All,

i bought a 91 240 w/ a SR20 from a guy in VA Beach who I think bought it from someone in Fairfax county as it still had the county sticker.

Anyway, it smokes bad now on start up and after I run it hard...Are the rings fried? I heard something about the Turbo can do that too...

Plus I am running the Apex Power FC and I think its running a bit rich as it has a strong fuel smell every now and then. Anyone help me with this? I am in Herndon, VA...can anyone look at this for me? I am a Scooby guy and I dont know very much about these cars or Mechanics in general for this type of problem.

How bad of a smoke also what color is it? First, check the turbo for shaft play. If the shaft goes in and out alot, then thats probably your culprit. If not, then could be anything, headgasket, rings, valve seals...etc.

Take the car to a shop and have them run:

compression test
leak down test
vaccum test

one of these will pinpoint your problem

compression test: burned valves, blown head gasket, worn rings, slipped timing chain, worn valve seats, cracked head....

leak down test: air coming from the intake side - leaking valve, air from the exhaust side - bad exhaust valve, aire from spark plug hole - bad head gasket or cylinder head problem, air leaving radiator cap - faulty head gasket, cracked head or block, air leaving oil cap or filler dipstick tube - bad piston rings.

vacuum test: should read a steady 17 inches of mercury (in. Hg). Here's a diagram of the vacuum results and what they mean.

Hope this helps.
