its probably that annoying timing chain guard, thats typically what makes that noise from what everyone else says. I havent had a 240 that doesnt make that noise.

as stated earlier 2 words
timing chain
or could be one of your guides broke and is just slapping along.
depends on the milage on your car and condition wether you need a chain or not. remove your valve cover and see how much play/slack is in your chain

Hey, I got a rattle coming from under my valve cover too. Someone told me it's the valve lash and the gap is off or something like that, but this is pretty annoying knock. Is it the timing chain guard like one of the other guys said or could it be the timing chain itself? I heard that the guard in the DOHC engines can just be removed to make the knocking noise stop. What do u all think?

the same thing happened to me. check this asap. if it is not the chain guard then it can cause really bad damage. the cam sprocket may be loose(maybe), the and it can come from the lifters. these are some of the possibiilities that can cause this if it is not the chain guard

Remove the valve cover then take off the chain guide which is located in the front of then engine right between the cam spockets it is very easy and actually recomened to do by nissan for other reasons. If the cams are bad, they probably are not, it will be very obivious when you look at them. You will see worn shinny steel.
