putting an older motor in a newer car

I know putting an older motor in a newer car is illegal, but I have an 90 coup, and an 89 motor, will they be able to tell that the motor is an 89 which will make me fail smog? The motors look the same. :x:

That should be fine as long as you have all the emissions equipment hooked up.
