depends, if yo uare doing a relpace with a whole new system, probably not, if you are keeping your old struts and replacin with coils with threaded seats yes...
If you buy one piece coils for sure no, when you remove the old strut and sprint it is one piece, so you just cast it aside and you replace with your new coils, on the other hand, if you are getting say a toiko and ground control setup, you PROBABLY won't need to use one either, it all depend, usually you can just drop the spring all the way and then put the cap on and adjust as needed.
If you are keeping your old struts, you need a spring compressor of big balls, my friend changes his without, when he pulled out the springs he leaned on them and they were soft enough to pull out without (2 people and for god sakes don't point them at yourslef!!!<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> however, that is the front only, usually rears are soft and you can get the cap of without incident very easily...
Hope this helps!

I think show's got you covered.
Generally, if you are using a complete coilover set up, you take the old ones out (complete) and put the new ones in (complete). The problem, like he said, is if you will need parts from the old ones (e.g., bushings, dust covers, mount cups, etc.). THEN, you will need to disassemble the old ones to get these parts. In this case, a compressor is advisable for the disassembly, but generally not needed for the new ones (since the springs are shorter). Good luck!

Personally i'd get them just for the hell of it.
U can buy them pretty cheap on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymot....r=0&t=0 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1816676732&r=0&t=0)
$9.99+$7.95 that's $17.94 for a set of compressors. Pretty cheap compared to what auto stores might charge u (the cheapest ones i saw at the stores were around $40). I got ones just like in the link, and i changed springs on my escort and camry without any problems...
