I have got the most annoying noises coming from my 96 240sx. Everytime I bring my RPM to 3000 or higher I get this weird rattling of metal coming from the rear. I checked the muffler and the heat shields and they don't seem like they are loose. It seems like its gettin worse the more I drive it some body please help me...

Does it do it just at 3000rpm or all the way after 3000rpm? My '97 does the same thing at about 2500rpm, but only at that rpm. I beleive it is one of the heat shields. It doesn't do it when it's cold, just after it's had time to warm up a bit. I guess that's because when it gets hot the metals expand causing is the get just loose enough to rattle and be annoying.

Actually now that you mention it, it only does it 3000 RPM but only when it warms up. What are you gonna do about it...Repair or remove?

there are two heat shields welded on the INSIDE of the hollow catalytic convertor shell (midway underneath the car). I bet you a thousand bucks the small tack welds have come apart that hold those shields on the inside. This sounds stupid but you will have to trust me. get down there pull the thing off and look in the inlet and outlet. it's hollow except for two plates that end up breaking loose and beating themselves against the inside of the cat every time you goose it and the exhaust rushes over them. I had a really bad experience with this problem too on my 95.

see an earlier post from mar 23 in "tech talk" entitled "exhaust noises..." hope it is helpful. sounds like a lot of people have this same problem.

Take Care,

Later...
