View Full Version : transmission whine problems
When accelerating in 1st or 2nd (possibly 3rd-5th, it's hard to tell) I hear the trany making a whining sound. Now if I push the clutch in while still in gear it continues to whine. But as soon as I pull it out of gear and leave in in neutral it goes away. Any ideas?
When it's cold it's kinda hard to put it in 2nd but only when it's cold. This started after I got my fluids changed a couple of months ago. It's possible the garage that changed it didn't use the correct fluid or did not put the correct amount. That's my guess so far.
Oh yeah, I just started to notice this after I replaced my head gasket but I don't think it's related.

Have Midas or a shop that offers them for free do a clutch adjustment. Consider replacing your throwout bearing as well.

replace you throwout bearing/pilot bushing or worst case scenario, your input shaft bearing is bad in which case your tranny has to be taken apart. Most likely though, its a problem with your throwout bearing and or pilot bushing. Replace those and you should be good to go. Good luck. :bow:

if u suspect that they didnt use correct gear oil then change it
gl4=good
gl5=bad for tranny
ive had workers at autoparts stores tell me to use gl5 b.c they dont sell gl4 - DONT FOLLOW THAT ADVISE
my tranny has bad bearings and is whining, it will make noise regardless of gear or neutral but it wont make noise when clutch is pushed in, i would say check ure clutch

I'd say they didn't put enought fluid in. How long ago was this?
If you disengage the clutch and leave it in gear the gears in the transmission will still be turning cause they're getting turned by the driveshaft. A "whining" noise would be the gears meshing, posibly with out enough fluid or too much (foaming=not good). If it was bearings at all it would be a rougher sound/grinding sound. Also if you took it out of gear while still rolling and with the clutch disengaged then and there was no noise the bearings on the output shaft would probably be fine. If you can sit with the clutch engage and the tranny out of gear with no noise then the bearings in for the main shaft and counter gear would be fine also.
Just change the fluid and take out the filler plug and fill till it comes out. Use some good fluid: Penzoil Syncromesh, MT-90. Check for metal shavings on the magnet too.
thanks guys! i had originally had the trany and diff fluid replaced about 2 months ago and my car hasn't been driven that much since then. i'm gonna to replace the fluids this week. i'll keep you posted.

i know this is an old post but theres no need to make a new one. i am having the same problem. my transmition started to whine last night and it is whining in nutural, and in gear. doesnt stop no matter what i do. so i drained the fluid and filled it up to the recomended amount with gl4, like always. still no change. never foamed not any flakes on the drain plug, shifts fine, but also hard to put into seccond when cold. but goes away after like 20 secconds of driving. my guess is it would be the bearings? and what was the problem you had?

My car makes a grrrr like sound when im in or out of gear going about 45 miles an up in 4th gear it only gets quiet when I go below that and then it sounds like it suppose to. Also when I coming to a stop like at a stop light it makes a popping sound very fast then slows when I stop just curious what it could be I think its getting worse dont wanna be w/o my daily driver. GL5 DOES NOT HARM THE TRANSMISSION UNLESS FOR SOME REASON YOU LIKE TO POUR WATER IN THE TRANSMISSION FOR FUCKS SAKE. TRANSMISSIONS ARE WATER TIGHT!!!!!! GL5 IS FINE. However.. The presence of water in the gear fluid is what causes corrosion. No water = No corrosion = No problems.
Pilot bushing only plays a role when you step on the clutch pedal because the input shaft and output shaft are at different speeds.
Depending on the condition of a throwout bearing, it can make noise when clutch pedal is NOT depressed, or pressed. Most of the time pressing the clutch pedal makes noise go away.
S13, S14, KA, SR transmissions are NEARLY identical.. BUT
1) KA and Sr transmissions use a "different" throw out bearing. Both function the same. SR has solid face, KA has open style trumpet face.
2) Bellhousings between KA/SR are different
3) Sensor plugs are different, sensors are slightly different.. I won't get into detail.
4) S14 transmissions are baffled better, providing lower tranny temperatures
Although there is fluid in the trans, a transmission can work fine with out gear fluid if the temperatures are kept low enough. Gear fluid is there PRIMARILY for cooling.. Lubrication yes, but to a lesser degree.
S13 trans is more prone to problems because the baffling inside is beat. When the temperature of the gears, bearings, synchros goes above a certain temperature, the gears at speed permanently create a "whining" sound. Too much heat caused the structure of the metals to change, and they resonate a wierd pitch. Heat is the enemy of the FS5W71C trans.. It really doesn't handle it well. This could also be the reason for "noise".
I used GL-5 in my S14 SR tranny..no issues.. No rust, no corrosion, NOTHING. Everything is in perfect shape. I'm using GL-5 in the S13 trans now.. once again, no issues what-so-ever.
My recomendation? Replace the pilot bushing, throw out bearing, and while you're already down there, the clutch with an Exedy (PB, TB included).
