Ok, so I wuz drivin down the interstate the other day and mah car started makin this high pitched whistleing sound when I accelerated. I checked it out and discovered that the flange gaskets on the Cat were shot. So I got sum new ones and proceded to replace them.

When I removed the cat I discovered that it had pretty much gutted itself and what wuz left wuz clogging up the exhaust pipe <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':nervous:'>, which blew the gasket's and caused the high pitched whistle. (exhaust gases have ta go sumwhere)

So in order to continue driving mah car I just knocked out the rest of the innards (like that word) of the cat and put it back on. Now it backfires and sounds like popcorn under mah seat. Also seams ta have a little less torque down low but more HP up high.

Here's mah question: Has anyone ever used one of those "Test pipe's" fer daily drivin'? I can't decide weather to go with a test pipe (30-40 bucks), git a used cat from a low mile car ($$ ?) or fork out the dough and git a new cat ($150-$200)

One thang that I do know is that it's no good runnin the gutted out cat! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

Any advise would be appreciated. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Oh yeah, I should point out that I already have 2.5" cat back exhaust with an OBX-R muffler. I believe that all of the stuffin' from the cat just blew out of the muffler and it's not stopped up.

You could get a high-flow cat, best of both worlds.

Yeah, but that whistle actually slowed me down. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

I talked to the guy at the muffler shop (been in business fer 20 yrs) and he said that those "high-flow" cats aren't all that.

Go figure!?! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

It may not be totally free flowing, but wouldn't it be better to pass emissions and have a compromise between the stock cat and a test pipe?

True, True. But I live in the sticks, where thar ain't no emissions testin'.

I think that I'll try the test pipe and see what happens. Fer $30 bucks it may be worth it. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>
