Fuel Filter

I hear most folks recommend the 300zx filter as a replacement, first 'cause it's bigger, and second 'cause it's typically cheaper. Couple of questions on it though. First off, what part#, or at the very least, which Z filter should I get? Secondly, does it fit in the stock clamp or should I get a new band for it?

I was just at Pep Boys, comparing these two filters.
Look up the reference for a '93 300ZX for the mfg part number.

In terms of dimensions, both filters are the same height (input to output nipples), but the 300ZX filter is about 3" diameter versus 2" for the 240 filter.

I decided to get the 240 filter despite the fact that the 300zx filter was only $1 more.  Reason being that I did not want to try to retrofit the bracket to hold the larger filter.

mine didn't fit on the stock clamp...it sorta..hangs there. it's still there, still filtering so i'm not worried about it.

BTW, if anyone has ideas on how to get a new bracket/band, let me know....

mine fit into the stock clamp easily.... on both an S13 and an S14.

Okay, since I'm not privvy to a FSM, I'm going to ask a very newbiesque question.

Where does the fuel filter go,
what tools are needed to change it by one's self,
how hard is it,
and
what year 300zx filter should I get (or are they all the same?)

The fuel filter is a round cylinder mounted on the wall of the engine compartment, by passenger's side wheel well. &nbsp;There is a rubber tube entering it from the bottom, and a rubber tube coming up from the top and going into the fuel injection system.

Tools: screwdriver to get the clamps off, socket wrench to remove the bracket if you're going to modify it. &nbsp;Maybe also pliers if the hoses are stuck (be careful not to damage the fittings).

A '93 300zx (all models) should be your reference car. &nbsp;Purolator model F54794.

Just installed my 300zx fuel filter.
Yes, it did just snap into the 240 bracket.
Top end speed is 20-30% improved. The old filter must have been clogged.

Total time: 1/2 hour.
Needed phillips head screwdriver, towel, kung-fu grip to get old filter off the upper fuel hose. Definitely do the bottom one first! &nbsp;Also helpful: a cup to collect the gas dripping from the old filter.

WATCH OUT FOR SPARKS! don't want a fire, now. Do disconnect your negative cable from the battery! I didn't, and I was nervous the whole time. I was going to disconnect the battery after I saw the gasoline dripping everywhere, but it might cause a spark if I disconnected it then.

I about to do this, but I am leary about running the car without the fuel pump fuse to get the gas out. Can I just unhook the clamp and drain into a milk jug or something &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':huh:'>

I just did it <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> &nbsp;I know jack about cars and I diddd itt.. I followeds the FAQ on 240sx.org, and it was really easy. &nbsp;Hardest part is taking the tube out of the old filter.

By big I mean dangerous as well. It will spray out like you are trying to plug the end of a water hose and probably get all over, including your eyes. But then it will countiune to run out of the hose due vacume or something (kinda like draining a waterbed). Anyways, it won't hurt it to unplug the fuse. There's really no way around it.
