How much shaft play is too much?

Just wondering how much shaft play on a turbo is reasonable for a used one and how much is too much. I'm put in my SR this weekend and I just checked my stock redtop turbo for play and it had maybe about 1 - 1.5 mm of play. Is this acceptable or will I be hunting for a new turbo soon? Doesn't sound too bad as long as it's not up and down play, I wouldn't be worried about it.

last i heard from detroit diesel is that garret allows .020" shaft play for needle bearings(brand new), ball bearing turbos are less, hope that helps

It's not that bad, I've seen worse that still ran pretty good.
