help me out. need to figure out what else can be taken off from the interior and what to do about the metal that separates the backseat from the trunk. to cut it or what? thanks

goodjuan

backseat, carpet, speakers, trunk/gas door release cable, seatbelt motors, seatbelt rails

don't cut out the rear shelf, find the spot welds and use a step sheet metal drill bit to drill them out. the shelf should just come right off after that.

Have you even started gutting the car? Once you start, everything should be pretty obvious.

Good Luck, and have fun using the key to open the trunk and pull the gas door release latch from now on.

Your gonna want to do the tar, that shit weighs a lot all together.

My coupe has no tar, no carpet, no power seat belts, and everything behind the front seats is gone (Like trim, seats, speakers, everything... lol). I replaced all that shit in the rear with a roll bar :)

I will try to remember to take some pix for you.

Yep the tar definitely weighs alot, if you take it out put it all in one trash bag and you will see. I am in the process of doing this to mine.

03-17-2005, 09:13 AM
i was doing that to mine also, and it was taking a shit load of time to do, so i brought it to a friends shop and he had both of his co-op students remove it. It took them both all week to do it!!

Tar takes a lot of time but it pays off in the end if your serious about losing weight.

Here is my sorry attempt.. I quit working on the interior..and a friend of mine is helping me do the body work. My coupe is now 99% dingless. woohoo!!!

hey so does anyone care about the wieght balance of thier cars??? I mean if you where serious about road racing... ever consider rocking ballast at different spots of teh car to even things out? or cuz these are street cars, no one really cares? From my understanding, you guys just made the front of your car the heaviest side of the car...

But who am I to say these things.. .my rear is half gutted too..

I guess u start shaving crap out the front too.. i removed the windshield washer resevor, sometimes removing the front bumper support.

pretty sure you can lose 1-200 pounds easy and then around 300 if you take out everything thats not needed. or if im wrong correct me.

like loosing wieght... shaving all your hair , and driving naked.. remove your headlights and just drive during the day time.. oh and the windshield wipers too =D

Mr_zero
03-17-2005, 02:17 PM
It depends on how far you are willing to go I think. There is a thread/link about this somewhere. 1-200lbs not that hard. PS remove, ac remove, heater core remove, carpet, rear seats, tar, spare tire, jack, auto windows, auto seatbelts, relocate battery...etc etc...

There is also some conversion (like 12.7lbs/1whp) or something like that. I started doing that stuff, but I dont know if it is really "worth" it to do all that stuff? I like speed/accel/balance like everyone else, but I also like super clean interior... so maybe I could just up the boost by 1psi for an equivalent 100lbs loss...

What do others think?

Anyone who is serious enough to do extensive weight reduction most likely has nice dual adjustable coilovers, which means they can corner weight the car and adjust the spring preloads, with driver inside, with average amount of fuel in the tank, and acheive awesome weight balance.

yes, and going to race shops and having your car corner-weighted is how to compensate for the changes in weight reduction. altho if you care about you exterior and such. do not remove bumper support, as the bumper will sag unless you weld on some brackets to hold up the bumper in key places. me personally im waiting for another dialy driver so I can remove everything. miscellaneous wiring, relocating fuseboxes to glovebox area. but as you commented on weight shifting. usually if you gut the car, a cage is soon to follow, and voila weight distribution is back in hand if you care so much about it. still, learn to drive with changes, it makes you more apt to deal with changes better.

IIRC lindsay removed approx 30pounds from his front end by welding brackets to hold his pop-ups 24/7

Set the Dry Ice on top the tar and then chip it off. The Ice goes direct from solid to gas, not really a melting. Dont forget to handle with gloves. You'll also want to use it right away and have as little of the ice exposed to the air when your transporting it, you'll have it to use for longer that way. Bring a plastic bag to wrap in if its not already sealed. You can also get it at ice cream shops or some party supply stores.

(Science experiment for you when your done- Put a small piece of dry ice in a 1/4 full plastic bottle of water, put the cap on quick and toss it in the middle of your yard.)

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo dry ice for ppl who dont know.. and its not tar.................... its sound deadning............ just use a heat gun and a scraper .... a good scraper not ur dingy thin metal one but the really thick hard one with a sharp edge......... dry ice method is stupid in my opinion... doesnt work all the time... just heat it up and it will come off with ease... to clean the left over stuff run to ur local paint store and get some wax and grease remover and some red scotch pad.. and start scrubbin... use a rattle can the same color as ur car and spray away. to paint over the area u just worked on.. but yeah wanna make bombs hook up a air fittin into a soda bottle cap and screw it on the bottle tight... hook up the air hose to the fitting set the bottle as far away as possible and then u hook up the air line... BOOM! lol and u dont get dry ice from ice cream stores dude............ u get it from weldin supply shops... yeah dry ice can burn u.. lol i just burnt my self with the dry ice bomb we made the other day... didnt get it from the ice store .. got it from the brown guy who converted his bike to a little ice cream store..ahha no offense anyone..oh yeah u know its alot ffaster if u crush the dry ice before puttin it into a bottle..... ...theres more u can do to get rid of excess weight but theres no point if ur not racing in some serious events...IMO i mean its still a street car.. yada yada ppl have theyre reasons.. i know..
theres still alot to do like notching and remove some useless panels .. i know u guys are gonna get a roll cage right?!??!?!!??!

goo gone or paint thinner works best for the left over gunk. and the heat gun trick is bad asss. took me about 5-6hrs to do my truck and almost all my passenger seat.
oh yeah, all you fools who are "serious about racing" imagine how hot your tranny tunnel will get wen your smashing on the track at high revs for a good few hrs..........the deading at my feet and on my tranny tunnel, stay.

Hmmm, maybe I'll strip mine and replace it with 15 lbs. of dynamat. I've heard it works better then factory soundproofing with less of it. So I can be quieter and 5 lbs lighter. :D
