View Full Version : SR sounds like WRX

I have a redtop SR with FMIC, Full exhaust, and boost. Here is my story:
I was driving normally when all of the sudden the car started to run really rough. I pulled over checked the plugs on my injectors, cas, tps, and pulled out my distributors and put them back in, and checked for vacuum leaks even though i had a solid 17Hg. After all that i started the car again and it was sounding like a wrx just like it did before i got home.
So far i have replaced distributors and their harness, checked for spark on all plugs, restabbed CAS and set for 15 degrees. Even replaced an injector(#3 cylinder) and nothin. I plulled out the cas and when i turn manually i hear clicking coming from the injectors. One thing i find odd is when i unplug the #3 injector while the car is running the car still runs the same, but when i unplug any other injector it starts to run worse. That is why i bought a new injector thinking it would help.
I have an appointment to get my car looked at on tuesday but id like to save money and find out myself wtf is goin on with my SR. Any help is much appreciated!

Did you pull the plug and look for any oil?

I'm gonna have to go with personal experience on this one and say.......headgasket or an O-ring. My redtop was running fine one day on a cruise and I barely boosted, but at one point just started to run very rough, saw white smoke, and noticed the engine sounded like a WRX. Turns out the headgasket was trash and so were most of the O-rings. Better the HG than a rod or something. Anyway, make sure you check the compression somehow and confirm you have good numbers. Also, make sure you are running at a a good A/F ratio. My SR was running pig-rich at the time and allowed fuel to get in past the O-rings so they were trashed.

could it be you are misfiring?

as of now i have the same exact problem with my car. very same condition. i washed the car the night before, and then woke up with the problem when trying to start the car the following morning.keep in mind, i dint wash the bay.the third cylinder isnt putting out.
i checked the following:
compression.. good!
timing.. is on
spark plugs... new and spark.
wires.. new
cap and rotor. good
fuel injectors are good along with o-rings and rail
new fuel filter and pump
changed coil and MAF
the trouble shooting could be a jacked up valve or something. i dunno.. this happend to me on my KA now. im still drivingit like this until my freak'n SR comes in. does anyone know how to solve this mystery problem? help us...

I do have a missfire and there was no oil on the plugs. I switched the coils on all cylinders but it seems #3 is still F***** up. I dont have any tool to check if the injector plug is gettin power or not. I even pulled back the tape to the injector harness to look for physical damage. I havnt done a compression test yet, but my car isnt puffin out any weird smoke so does that rule out a Headgasket. There are no funny smells or even funny sounds(besides exhaust tone). I guess ill just have to wait till the computer diagnostic.

Open your radiator cap and tell me what color it is; do this with the car running as well and tell me what happens. If you see any oil or if the coolant is slightly milky its a headgasket. If when you run the car with the radiator cap off and it starts basically shooting water out then then it could also be a headgasket. What you are describing doesnt really sound like that to me thgough. You either dont have compression on that cylinder, your injector is not firing, or you have no spark.

Bubbles in the coolant could be headgasket, or a cracked head or block. If there are bubbles you can find what cylinder it is by cutting the spark untill the bubbles stop. If you can not get a cylinder to fire you should do a leak-down test. That way you can see if there is a problem with the intake, exhaust or rings.

Found the problem causing my car to run like crap. It turned out to be the CAS, i took the car to get a diagnostic and the CAS just wore out over time (135,000 Miles).
