If you need 4 quarts in you motor...

2qts 10w30 + 2qts 5w30 = 7.5w30

So if it means that much that you have a lower viscosity than 10, but higher than 5 for cold starts...then mix the 2.

I don't think it works that way...

and even if it did, from what I've read about oils, it's not a good idea to mix them.

As long as it's new oil fromt he same manufacturer (i.e. Mobil 1)...there si NO problem with mixing viscosities.

I prefer to use 10w40 for when it's warmer and I'm driving high speed events...15w50 is too thick IMO...but a 10w40 is about right. Closest I can get is Mobil 1 in 15w50 (2qts) and 10w30 (2qts).

And "S14DB"...it is that simple, and it does work like that.

See here for more: www.ls1.com/forums/archive/ (http://www.ls1.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-345725.html) (1st article I found from a quick Google search...but this is a common practice, and has no ill effects).

Your math is wrong. http://www.baseoils.shellglobalsolutions.com/calculations/blending_pop.asp
http://www.infineum.com/information/viscosity.html

If you mix an 10w30 with an 5w30 you will get either a thicker 5w30 or a thinner 10w30 (there is no 7.5 grade as defined in second link). That is because the top of the 5w30 grade is the bottom of the 10w30 grade.
