View Full Version : auto -> manual swap, idle problems?

Ever since I finished the auto to manual transmission swap on my '91, it idles funny now. The idle will hover around 1500rpms for a bit and then SLOWLY drop down around 700-800rpms. If I blip the gas, it will jump all the way up to 1500 rpms and then again drop down very slowly. Is this normal? Someone suggested swapping out to a manual ECU, but I thought this wasn't necessary on s13s..

Your post was actually the one that tipped me off about this. Thanks! Searching paid off! Just wanted to see if anyone else had the same issues.

Correct sir, this is common when you keep the auto ECU, swap it and the problem goes away

Thanks for the help. I swapped in an ecu from a '93 5spd and idle is perfect now.

sorry for brining up a old old post but cant find this simple awnser...
is it just plug and play as far as putting it in.. i have a manual ecu for the same year as my car a 92 which is running an auto with the 5 speed swap and a funky idle.. and it drops realy low sometimes when i take it out of gear. but im reluctant on just plugging it right in.. any wiring i have to change or splice whatsoever? ive seen some write ups but all are for s14's your input would be greatly appreciated :)

Plugs right in.
As long as you have the same ecu for your chassis.

Yours drops to like 50rpm sometimes? Mine has after I get on it a but then slow down and push in the clutch...I'm hoping it's the ecu but I believe some wiring has to be messed with in order to pop it in

Thanks so much. Would I have to write up any of the sensors on the trans to it? I have the pinout for it if needed

Manual ecu uses less sensors than the auto one.
Plug and play baby.

Ok so I plug it right in and the car wont rev over 2k and it tends to like gas itself ...very weird and un drivable I put the auto one back in and it runs ok I popped open the ecu to see if anything looks amiss but it's good to the naked eye are you sure no wires need swapping.Manual ecu uses less sensors than the auto one.
Plug and play baby.
