what do you mean by "cuts out at 3.5k" ??? like it wont rev past that ? have you checked for vacuum leaks ? intercooler connections ? maf plug ? i know if your maf isnt connected it wont rev past like 2500 rpm. hope this helps.

yea maf is a very common problem. A friend had the same type of thing happen to his SR.
dunno

CAS would keep the car from starting

sounds like a maf, or loss of air problem to me.
check all connections. if you are loosing air anywhere from the maf to the throttle body your car will run like rosie odonald

I stand by the CAS. If the disc under the cap is shredded, it will start. My car had this exact same problem except it was cutting me off at 2.5k, I speak from experience.

car will only not start if you are more than 2 teethe off in either way.
Check your timing, and remove the 4 phil head screws that hold the plastic cover onto the cas. If there is any scratch marks, or bends, or if it doesnt look new inside, replace it.
Still sounds like a maf or air problem.

3.5k means the motor's running in safe mode.
maf, cas, boost leak (wastegate, piping, BOV)

I had the same problem and it was a massive boost leak.

its the maf. how long did u have the engine for? was it outside? get another maf and try that. u may have to adjust the timing after u get her running right also

Air problem is usually the suspect.
Air metering loss, (boost leak)
Maf (air metering sensor)
dunno

Listen to Blu808, it sounds like an air problem. I know when I swapped in an SR, I forgot to wire the IACV and it wouldn't make it past 3500 and I was shooting fuel out the exhaust. Make sure the IACV is working correctly, then start checking for air leaks in your intercooler piping. Also make sure to plug up the little hole in the rubber intake piping.
A MAFS problem will make your car cut out at 2500 RPM's, not 3500. You can even test it out yourself by unplugging the MAFS.
