I just ran a search and didn't find much info about this... brakes are new to me. I got the 300ZX brakes and tossed the stock metal shims (one vented and one solid per pad) because they were rusty. Do you guys think those are neccessary or do they only stop squealing?
Thanks!

Yes they're necessary, to avoid the squealing. Trust me you don't want to push your brakes without the shims. LOUD!!!!

John, I've never used shims in over five years of running Z brakes, no noise.

I have never used shims on any car never had a squeak problem
except for hawk hp+ pads but they squeak all the time when they are cold shims or not

Thanks guys. No shims it is... I didn't want to have to order that outrageously expensive hardware kit just for shims.
