i LOVE how the wrx's sound with an aftermarket exhaust. Is it just that thats how the car works or how do they achieve that sound? the small muscle car type sound u kno the "blup blup blup blup blup" type sound ha, yes i kno go ahead and flame on that! but anyway i wanna kno if u can get that sound on a 240? yes? no?

No...WRX "boxer" motor is unique in it's sound...it's not an inline 4 like a 240SX...think of it like a "V4". Except the cylinders face directly away from one another...

yup, like what orion said...unique to boxer engines only.

True, they do have an awesome sound; but it sounds more like a piper cub opposed aircraft engine than a V-8. I'd say the reason for their sound is the fact that they have seperate manifolds for each 2-cylinder bank and a turbo, which add up to a slower audible firing impulse.

i think they sound horrendus, like a fuckin chain saw.... there is a guy around here with the blitz nur-spec on his.... damn thing sounds like a chain saw...

The answer is yes, but probably not easily. The sound is not so much JUST because its a boxer engine but also because the exhaust flow pulses, which happens because the stock exhaust manifold is unequal length. I would think you would get a very slightly similar effect with an unequal length manifold on other engines.

I agree it sounds terrible though not like a chain saw. I think the note resembles that of a 6 cylinder running on only 4 or 5 cylinders. An aweful sound to say the least.

Yeah, When the 2.5RS guys run a equal length 'Y' header it sounds like any other car. It's that long crossover pipe that gives it it's sound.

well my friend has a acura vigor with a option 2 exhaust and his car at idle resembles the wrx but with a much lower tone to it.... so... and oh yea its a in-line 5 cylinder

i've always played with the idea of putting a wrx motor into a 240z or 510, the exhaust manifolt reaching over to the passenger side might even sidestep the steering box problems when doing other engine swaps into the older datsuns.

You do realize that boxer is the nickname for all horizontally opposed engines?

I assume you thought Boxster.

well the design is rather similar on the basic level porsche boxer 6s sound really strange the older aircooled ones sound much like hte WRX but the newer watercooled engines have this wierd noise that and they always sound like ther are dieseling at idle

or if you scrap the bottom of your down pipe enough on speed bumps to get a hole in it, you can create a semi-realistic copycat sound of a modified wrx.

nevermind that that if you hit speedbumps hard enough and enough times to get a HOLE in your down pipe, you WILL mess up the seals on your turbo.

/my turbo makes queer noises now. like a gay man farting.

i would have to agree haha...i'm a subie owner myself (GDB 04 WRX), either people think theres a porche motor under the hood...or they think WRXs and STIs are twin turboed.....

Isnt there an EJ20DETT somewhere?
I know I've seen the engine before, but I dont know where it came from.

WINN4R

yes unequal length headers cause the burble sound. when you install equal length headers it doesnt sound nearly as good, even honduh-esque. the WRX STi Spec C has equal length headers and a twinscroll turbo, it sounds nothing like a regular scoob.

my friend's s13 was sounding like a wrx for about two days until he noticed what was wrong with it.. it really did sound like a wrx, but it wasnt healthy for his engine.. while changing sparkplugs, i believe he put the wrong lines into the wrong slots, thus giving him this sound. in reality, yes, it sounded pretty nice, but i think he was only running on like 2 or 3 cylinders. (it was a ka for those wondering)

I don't buy into the unequal manifold theory. I have heard plenty of subaru's with aftermarket manifolds that don't sound like any inline 4 I have ever heard (granted not many equal length manifolds are being made...).

I just went to a pro rally in PA, and you could always tell when it was a subaru coming around the corner, and many of these cars are *highly* modified open class and group n rally cars.

It might make the difference in sound even greater, but I don't believe its the ultimate cause. Probably has more to do with firing order/timing, much like the dirty sound of a harley. Just a guess...

<02 wrx and a 91 240
