View Full Version : Hey, I'm the S15 Guy

Tripper Cook
02-21-2005, 10:18 PM
Just wanted to say hey to everyone that was posting on the other thread about the S15 I bought my wife. I didn't get the chance to post before the thread was locked. There were no tricks or secrets to getting the car as some may suspect. I'm not hush-hush about the process. It's published information. Yes, I did subcontract to a registered importer, yes the car did cost a ton because of all the processes some of you mentioned. (They were required and I paid the price to get them done). NHSTA, DOT, EPA, taxes, fees, bonds, deregistration in Japan, crash test, safety reinforcements, etc., etc., etc. Every document is there. Every one. Despite what a few may believe, it is possible with enough money. I enjoy JDM Nissans as well as U.S. Nissans. My shop performs quite a few JDM engine swaps as well as performance mods for many brands of import cars. Last year we made a number of custom car shows promoting our business (Formula D, Hot Import Nights, NOPI, and SEMA). Presently we show a '89 R32, '96 R33 Vspec, now a '99 S15 Spec R, '03 350Z, a supercharged '03 Miata, and a '03 S2000. We also race our cars in Solo II events. The only issue I take as fradulent is the comment about Georgia. Most of us are very friendly, non-hating types that enjoy cars. If you are ever in the area, please look me up. I'd love to show you our fleet, our shop, and our southern hospitality. We work hard and party hard. Cheers! ;)

My relatives live in georgia. when i visit all i see are confederate flags. tell me what is friendly/non-hating about that. I know that comment was way off topic but whatever. Tripper::im sure you have read the previous thread about that kid speaking of your S15 being legalized. From my POV the fuss is because its legalized in GA and not CA. Most zilva people reside in CA, reason we are so intent on the title of legalized is because if its legalized in CA then its fine everywhere else.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Total cost was around 50K. To Sideviewcivic, the car is 50 state U.S. legal and actually was done on the west coast. The only thing about my car that California doesn't like is the aftermarket exhaust. I have a lot of friends in southern California and man, the law out there is ridiculous. I hate it for anyone living in Cali. How do car nuts have any fun when you can get stopped in Cali and have your car impounded until you put it back stock? I would agree that California, without question, is the toughest state.

nice car but for that kinda cash you could've bought a much nicer car that wouldn't be irritating to drive/cost a fortune to fix/is faster/has a warranty.

i was under this impression as well

and the reason i made the comment on not giving cred to it being "legalized" in GA is because it is very easy to register cars in some states and the only state i give credit to and will believe a car is totally legal is if it is CA and even then there are some loopholes

Kalifornia car laws sucks

whether i have the cash or not is irrelevant. the fact that i could buy a C6 if i really wanted it is trivial, the C6 is a much better deal, looks better, and stomps the piss out of every car under 100K. the s15 can't even begin to compare to teh tech in the C6.

i could put 15 grand cash on it today and get it for 200 bucks over invoice... can you?

Who cares how someone spends their money? You pay a price for uniqueness. Anyone can walk in to a dealer and buy a Corvette or Viper etc. But how many people own a S15 that's legalized?

Sometimes its not about the money, its about having the car you love.

not everyone cares about speed, or deal. Looks is subjective, I like the s15's look more, it's has that angry aggressive shark look to it. Vette has an european styling that isn't as unique, though I do admit it is sexy as hell. Also s15's interior > vette's cheap plastic interior. s15's handling > vette. s15's aftermarket support > vette . I would say a vette would be a better deal, but I'd rather take an s15 because you don't see one everyone like you will see C6s soon enough. Also everytime I look into a corvette, I see some middle aged old guy with white hair in a mid-life crisis driving one.

It's just like me saying, "Oh why didn't you get a CRX than a 240sx, it's cheaper to mod, more reliable, better deal, etc..." If one choice was the clear cut winner, then everyone would get it.

the thread is about the s15 and now it got legalized. leave the "with that money you could of gotten this car" shit out of the thread.

if you guys wanted to buy a c6 so damn much, why the hell spend money on a nissan, juss quit while your at it and save for a c6

im reading this thread because im intrested on how the s15 got 50 state legal, i dont want to waste my time reading this thread becuz some prick believes the owner wasted his money on a slower car.

do i care if the s15 is slower than a c6? or doesnt have 300hp or watever like a c6? hell personally the c6 looks like ass to me. no i dont care, if i wanted to read about a c6, id join a corvette forum.

we've heard your whole c6 argument time and time again, and frankly its getting old just like your "hotshot" attitude. if youve taken the time to come up wiht "clever" flames, im sure you can take the time to see whom im talkin about.

Nightwalker, having an S15 legalized here is pretty cool but somewhat pointless cause there are similar platforms available to us. Even though i dont really jock Skylines a whole lot i'd rather see more of those here cause it's a unique platform. What would be really cool is to have JDM and USDM cars be the same version of eachother in the future.

And it's a little pointless to bring a vette into the argument at this point cause everyone knows how kick ass it is already.

Just to be fair…

We did not release a lot of information about the legalization of the car, that is something that tripper and only tripper had the right to divulge so that’s why he gave you guys more information than David.

But we invite you to Follow along with the Trip Across the country on our website www.coolcatracing.com , our last update on the car they were in “City of Industry, Ca” just south of Los Angeles, there they should be uploading some new photos of the trip, where we hope to get them online tonight sometime

No most of the people were just hating on you not on the actual story. Someone makes a thread and can't back it up with any facts is pretty sad.

Anyways is the s15 completely legal in CA now? I read the car is 50 states legal but illegal exhaust so that was kind of confusing.

god that was a big fuckin waste of time. Browsed through 3 pages and nothing about how it was legalized. Just 3 minutes of my life wasted sorting through all that bullshit about a fucking c6 vs an s15. Fuck the vette. A vettes a vette. A lambo is a lambo and a 240 is a 240. s15's handling > vette. s15's aftermarket support > vette ..

hah, no way an S15 or any factory Nissan car outhandles a Corvette. What aftermarket support do u need for a Corvette? It's already 400HP lol. I'd be scared to drive it if i had more.

none the less, the S15 Sepc R is a very nice car. Rare acquisition as well.

publicenemy137
02-22-2005, 10:54 PM
Corvettes have a high skid pad rating but I heard it's all from rubber and tested where there are no bumps and not everyday roads (massive wide-ass rear tires, i think vettes are like 11 inch wide while a 240's is like 6.5). As far as aftermarket support, I meant suspension (more potential than a vette), exterior/interior mods, engine doesn't really matter b/c a vette will have more potential anyways. Of course I guess it's not fair to compare aftermarket support since the C6 just came out

I also talked to some people who have owned a C5 vette (not c6, but their suspensions are similar) as well a 240sx, he said that the 240sx felt more nimble. Also s15's suspension the best outta s13 and s14 isn't it, isn't it the most balanced and tuned the best?

Alright i'm not goin to talk about vettes more either.

As far as him legalizing the s15 with an SR, maybe he registered it as a showcar? Which means he is only supposed to take it to car shows and car events.

Why would you genralize Mercedes as being cars with "way more hp"? Most Mercedes I see/drive are underpowered in my opinion. Mercedes makes a big variety of cars just like Ford or Chevy. The CLK 55 AMG is a Mercedes flagship can for performance and class, and it comes with around 360 hp. The only car I know of, that makes with more hp than a C-6 is the SLR Mclaren, and it does wear 11" rear wheels.
