i just got my sr20det head in the mail. i got it all cleaned up and ready to go.
i was wondering if i can turn the crank with the head off to align the pin for TDC.
and do i need to do anything for aligning the cams?
anything else that i need to do before i start trying to remember how to bolt everything back on?
Thanks in advance!

your supposed to have set the motor to tdc before you removed the head inthe first place. i would not recomend turning the crank with the head off unless you also have the timing cover off and car see the mark on the crank sprocket as well as the shiny link on the timing chain for the crank sprocket. Your supposed to line up the two off color marks with the two dots on the cams so they are pointing away from each other at equal distance , you can also double check by dropping a long screwdriver down the spark plug hole so it rests on the top of the piston just to make sure your at tdc. What point in the job are you at?

Not only TDC, but TDC on the compression stroke of cylinder #1.
Set the bottom end to TDC on #1 & #4 via crank bolt.
Lube the cams/rockers a little and turn the pin to TDC via cam bolt.
Align sliver links to punkmarks on sprockets.
One the sohc you would then align the distributor to fire on #1 at this position. However, on the distributorless sr, there is a procedure for aligning the CAS I believe.

get a new timing chain or find the marks.

how unspecific can you get. that's the question i'm asking. is it ok to just turn the crank (if i dont let the chain fall off, etc)

you should've downloaded and referred to the FSM BEFORE you did anything to your car..
oh, and he means front cover aka oil pump cover aka timing chain cover
