View Full Version : K&N cone filter: CARB number?

I went to get my car smogged today, and the guy immediately saw my K&N and asked for a CARB #, which I didn't have on me. I figured the k&n is as common and simple a mod as possible, and can't possibly fuck up emissions...but he said he'd fail me automatically if i could not produce a CARB #.
I checked my box from K&N, and all it came with was some stickers (no numbers), with nothing on the box itself.
I'm thinking K&N makes intakes for anything and everything, it has to be 50state legal.
Anyone have a K&N cone filter and know what the CARB# is?
Stupid little thing, but just gotta take care of it

Is it the dropin K&N from like Kragen? Those don't need a CARB #.
The only K&N for our car that has been tested and issued a E.O. # is the "FIPK" intake kit. I don't know if they make one for S14, so you may be screwed.
Check out their website.

yes..for something that dumb.. you do need a specific carb# for that vehicle. I just look right past it if you're cool.

too bad you don't live near smog tech!! :D
dude if there's no way you can get a carb# (for your S14, since the K&N you have may just be a universal one), just slap on the airbox real quick ;)

Depending on the price.. I would just put my stock airbox on. 30 min drive? or 10min to slap on an airbox? hmmm tough decision. =)

I guess i'll have to scrounge through my pile of old parts

K&N makes a Carb legal filter for the 240. It's a huge filter. There are other K&N filters that are universal and don't have a carb number.

that carb stuff is totally unlawful. maybe peopel should start doing something about it before you have to start putting yellow stars on your cars.

Yeah, the FIPK has a CARB sticker, which I mentioned. But as I also mentioned, I don't think they make it for S14, which is what he has...
I haven't checked, so I may be wrong about there not being a FIPK for the S14.
If he just got one of those universal cones... yeah, time to put on that airbox, buddy. Or find a test only station that will look the other way.

It's a universal. I found most of my stocker box, I can slap that sucker on their as soon it stops raining and I get off of work.
If i'm missing anything, I'll steal it off of Turdz bone stocker =)

Whenever I used to get the Maxima smogged, I had a JWT cone intake and they guy never really even cared, never said anything. Where are you getting your check done?
I usually dont fail these cars, but rather refuse the job. I dont like dealing with people that are pissed off failing over something stupid. That's why every time i get a civic/mustang through the door i pop the hood before i scan my badge.

Man screw that. When you've been working modified cars for a while at a TO..those guys will start to piss you off. Some fool was trying to debate with me if a HKS BOV was legal.. I told him that it wasn't..and he was like..yes it was. But whatever.. it was my dumbass fault for not smogging his car..now I'm out 70 bucks. But whatever.. if some guy tries to pull that on me again.. I'll smog it anyways and fail his punk ass.
If the tech says your car isn't going to pass with the mod. It WONT pass. Don't bother arguing cause he can fail your car at will. Which I believe I should do.. since I am a business owner..keeps my pockets warm.
Refusing jobs = no money
Only time I refuse jobs..is if I'm busy playing Half Life.. :bowrofl:
I refuse jobs because i have to take the bitching and the owner makes all the money from it

That's not true. All you have to say is "the computer/state recognizes as an invalid component on your vehicle, therefore it will fail." Just make up some BS that it's not under your control that the vehicle fails.
If the guy is a dick. Fail him.
they dont listen to me. i have come close to verbally abusing people to the point where i think they might try to fight me.. When i get my own business going i will decide who gets to bitch at me.
Anyways.. FUCK CUSTOMERS!! The business owner is always right
