When I start my car up the power steering pump whines until it warms up a bit. I have read in other threads that this problem can be medicated by Lucas Oil's Power Steering Stop Leak. Now here is my question. My power steering fluid is full and is there any way that I can bleed the fluid without taking off the hoses and making a mess? Thanks.
Bleed no. Take the air out, yes.
to take the air out of the system, raise your front on 2 jackstands. Turns the steering from one end to the other, a few times on each side. That should take car of the air in the system. If that doesn't work, check for a leak in somewhere in the lines....
you dont even need to have your front wheels on jack stands just turn them left right left right left right, top up fluid, left right left right left right left right top up fluid ect untill left right dosent lower the fluid level anymore or make the steering chunky or non smooth

you don't NEED them in the air, but having them there greatly reduces the risk of flat spotting tires
i highly doubt that you will ever flat spot a tire if you are bleeding a powersteering pump unless you are running slicks made of bubble gum and your on sand paper under your wheels..

were you in my garage?

do you have power steering fluid in there, or do you have automatic transmission fluid in there?

To the anal-retentive, every little bit counts, thank you very much

My car is doing this as well (S14). It's only when it's cold out. I was reading about cavitation within the pump (air getting into the system).
I also notice that after the car is completely warmed up, I can see the fluid bubbling within the reservoir. Is that normal in hydraulic operation?

You could be just plain low on ATF, if the rack is leaking.

Most likely it doesn't need more fluid.
Check your belts, I bet they are slipping during startup.

how are you so sure it's power steering pump whine??
it could be your timing chain guide. KAs were notorious for this..
well i guess if you really want to know you can just loosen up the power steering belt to difinitively find out.
but yeah if your pump is doing the actual whining, it's on its way out.

thead is from 05. we are all aholes

Haha. My problem is definitely not timing chain rattle. It's power steering whine, and it's annoying as fuck and I want to throw this pump into the east river.

Belts slipping and power steering whine in no way sound similar. You will feel power steering whine in the wheel.

And? That does not mean that the OP isn't experiencing what I said/suggested.
A huge amount of 240s I see have power steering whine during startup.
One of mine had that issue until I replaced the belt and tightened it to spec.

the Symptoms you are describing are symptoms of air in the hydraulic system per FSM
I know when the fluid level on my Other car was low it whined, filled it up and it was GTG.

Dunno, the belts are definitely not slipping. They are tight, and new.
I can feel the whine in the wheel. It's really loud and annoying. Also, only when it's cold. After a few minutes it usually goes away. The fluid is full also
Bad pump?

How tight? Too tight a belt can put a side load on the bearing in the pump, causing noise. Once the belt warms up the rubber naturally 'gives', allowing for a little more play in it.
All 91-98 DOHC pumps are the same.

Wow, I never thought of that. Good point, I will take a look at it tonight. How much deflection do you recommend?

I don't have a given measure, it's all feel when I tighten a belt. The owner's manual has a really good picture and measurement in it, so does the FSM, I've just always gone by feel and adjusted as required depending on noise after.

Okay, so the pump has been replaced, and the noise is 90% gone. It still makes a little noise, only when turning though (obviously). It has been bled with new fluid and I know the pump I put in was good. What else could it be?

I know this is an old thread but I figured I would build off this one. I get power steering whine only at start. After a couple revs it goes away and does not come back till the car is restarted. Belt is tight and fluid is full. Does not whine when wheel is turned hard even when turned to stop. Any idea?

^^^
Sounds like a high performance racing pump with quad duranium bearings which create a wine until the secondary hypereutectic piston fires and creates a JET fusion for the bearings to heat them up and reduce noise. It's perfectly normal.

Oh well in that case everything should be fine. Thanks for your input.
